  Question
  Hi,

I have created a website using sharepoint services.

Emails are sent out whenever new users are added or when new alerts are set
up.

But when a document is added to a library for which an alert has been set
up, emails are not being sent out.

Can anyone suggest what could be the problem.

Thanks,
Sri

  Answer
Search the WSS FAQ site with "alerts".

It has various FAQ items with possible reasons for this.

  Mike in Finland!

I have the same problem and it is probably the poblem described here:
http://wss.collutions.com/Lists/FAQ/DispForm.aspx?ID=198

"Alerts cannot be processed if the account that the SharePoint Timer Service
is running under does not have access to the content database."

I did not set up the installation and I need advise on how to give the account
used access to the content database.

Is this done in SQL Server?

Sorry if my question is alittle on the side of WSS.

This isn't my particular area but this might help you. (This is for a server
with both WSS and SQL server and both are on theserver)

1. Open Enterprise Manager and under SQL Server look for the Security
directory. Open the Logins directory below that and you'll see the names of
accounts that have rights to access the master table.

2. Go to Programs / Adminsitration Tools / Services and right click on
SharePoint Timer Services and then on Properties. This will give you the
login information (in my case NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK)

what you need to do is see that the two (1. and 2.) match.

If not I suppose you can either select in 2. one of the accounts that
already have rights or add a new account to 1. which is the same as that
used in 2. I suspect the first is easier.

--------------------

Note that these are just ideas and what I would be looking at if I had the
problem myself and no access to an SQL specialist.

I grabbed a SQL Server guy and the easier method is to amend the *Service*
MSSQLServer Logon to the same account as the SharePoint Timer Service !

  Mike and SQL Server guy!

Thanks it works! I got 1300 (old) alerts within 30 seconds :-) after I changed
account! So works fine!

  Hi Mike,

I have gone through your article at wss.collutions.com.

The Steven Burnett suggestion mentioned there worked for me. But i did not
understand how it worked.
And why we need to recycle the SPTimer.

I just want to know the root cause so that i can avoid the same situation in
future.

Regards,
Prem.

Sorry but in this case I don't know of the root cause.

I'm just happy that the solution worked for you even when working "blind".

(Thanks for pointing out in the other thread that www.asaris.de is now
wss.asaris.de. There are a lot of old posts from me that now point to
the wrong address but the hosters changed the address in connection with
DNS changes. The collutions site has the same content but in a different
style)
