When I highlight text it is appending instead of replacing? in Word General Questions

  Question
  Never seen this one before .... My coworker will highlight text and instead
of replacing it, when he starts typing the cursor deselects the text and
moves to the front of the selection and starts typing. If he uses the delete
key it will delete. If he uses the space key it will also move to the front
of the selection and add a space.
