Somehow I enabled "linking" of text boxes in a word document. I have read the
help files in Word and it says ...[ use the "unlink" icon to unlink text
boxes ]. What else can I look for in order to undo this annoying function?

You need to display the TEXTBOX toolbar. Make sure the cursor is in the top
level of the linked text boxes, then click the "Break forward link" button in
that toolbar.
I have not been able to locate the TEXTBOX toolbar. I guess I should have
mentioned that I am running Word 2000. I am fairly literate on the computer
and I know where to find and enable toolbars, I just don't see a toolbar
labeled TEXTBOX. Do you think I need to reinstall MS Word from the Office
2000 disc?

Reinstalling rarely achieves anything useful. The text box toolbar is only
listed if the text box is selected.

Gotcha - Thanks. I checked to see if the "unlink text" was an option and it
isn't. It is acting as if there is no "linked textbox" when in fact there is.
I wonder if there are other ways to get past this impasse?

Looking at the buttons in this toolbar, from left to right, I see:
- Create text box link
- Break forward link
- Previous text box
- Next text box
- Change text direction
Not all are always enabled, but they're all there. Which ones do you have (hover
the mouse over the buttons until the tooltip comes up)?
Also, what behavior makes you think the text boxes might be linked?
Wayne, have you managed to resolve the problem with apparently linked
text-boxes? It seems that I have the same problem and don't know what to do

To tell you the truth Nash, I was unable to resolve this problem. What I
finally did was use Microsoft Publisher to accomplish the same task as I
tried to do with Word. It truthfully is MUCH easier to use Publisher, which
is really built for those kinds of applications.
Hope this helps...bud

There is a seldom-seen form of document corruption that causes a
strange form of text box "linkage". Text entered in one box will be
duplicated in another box. You may even get two cursors at once.
Follow the procedures for dealing with corrupt documents. A round trip
through Star Office has been reported to work, for example. One person
fixed it by using File | Open and Repair instead of just opening the
file.

Yes! Finally a solution that works. We were banging our heads on the desk
because the text box *always* copied the previous and there seemed no way to
unlink them. Doing the 'file -> open and repair' worked instantly. Thank
you.
