  Answer
If this only happens in one particular document, try opening that
document and clicking on Tools | Unprotect Document.

If all new and existing documents are locked for editing, then
it's probably because you have not activated your Word/Office
software, or because you have an expired trial version of Office
2003. What happens if you start Word and click on Help |
Activate Product? If you are already activated, a dialog box
saying so will appear. If you are not activated, the Activation
Wizard will start. If you have an expired trial version, a
dialog box will prompt you to enter a valid product key or
purchase a key online.

I am having the same problem: all documents new and old are locked. But my
Office software is activated, and it was not a trial version.

Any ideas? Thank you!

Doug Robbins - Word MVP 6/14/2009 2:24 PM PST

It is more likely that you are using Word 2007 that is either a trial
version that has expired, or your copy of Word/Office has not been
activated.

In that version, the equivalent of the Tools menu item that garfield-n-odie
mentioned is the Protect Document item on the Developer tab. If the
Developer tab is not present on the Ribbon, click on the Office Button (the
round pizza like thing in the top left hand corner of the screen and then on
Word Options in the bottom of the dialog and in the Popular dialog, check
the "Show Developer tab in the Ribbon" box.

However, as first mentioned, it is more likely that you are using Word 2007
that is either a trial version that has expired, or your copy of Word/Office
has not been activated.
