How to Convert Microsoft Office System Trial Product to a Full Version

Published: March 1, 2004

You've used your trial and now you want the full version. Follow these steps to convert your Microsoft Office System trial product to perpetual use with no uninstall or reinstall necessary.

Note  If you received your trial as part of a purchase of a new computer, follow this conversion process.

1.

Obtain the Microsoft Office System product at any retailer or online retailer to get a valid product key. After you have obtained your copy you have two options to start the conversion process. If you are converting a downloadable trial of Microsoft Office OneNote™ 2003 that you downloaded after March 31, 2004, then you may choose to convert your trial product online without first obtaining a retail copy.

You have two options to start the conversion process.

In any of the trial expiration reminder messages sent to you in the last 30 days of the trial period, click Convert.

In the Help menu of the trial product you are using, click Activate Product. You can do this at any time during the trial period, or even after the trial has expired.

Example of how you can start the conversion process

You can start the activation process from your Microsoft Office System trial product.

Note  To avoid uninstalling the trial if you obtain the full product version at retail, the full product version should be the same version and language as the trial software. For example, if the trial software is OneNote 2003 English, the full product version should be OneNote 2003 English as well. If the full product version is a different language version, you will have to uninstall the trial and manually install the full product version.

2.

In the Setup dialog box, click Enter Product Key, or if you are converting a OneNote 2003 trial that you downloaded after March 31, 2004, you will see a Buy Online Key option. When converting to a full product, you are encouraged to compare prices between our authorized resellers both through retail and online. Prices may vary.

Example of the Setup dialog box

Convert your trial into a full product through the Setup wizard.

Note If you choose to obtain the product online, you will be routed to the Microsoft Web site and the Microsoft eCommerce vendor to obtain a product key. You will then be returned to Office 2003 Setup.

3.

Enter the product key shown on the packaging of the product obtained at retail, or the product key that you obtained online. Click Next.

Example of where to enter your product key

Enter the product key.

4.

You will then see the End User License Agreement (EULA). You must accept this agreement to use the software. Select I accept the terms in the License Agreement and click Next.

Example of the End User License Agreement

Accept the EULA to begin the installation.

After you accept the EULA, an alert window will open saying that your product is being updated. Another message will open once the software has been set up successfully.

After launching the full version for the first time you will be prompted to activate it. Unlike the trial activation, during activation of the full version you will have the option to activate the software either over the Internet or by telephone. The default option is to activate the software over the Internet. Once that is done, the trial is converted to perpetual use with no uninstall or reinstall necessary.
