Transfer Account Ownership

Topic Last Modified: 2012-11-09

An account in the Microsoft Online Services Customer Portal belongs to a single account owner who has a unique Windows Live ID. To move the account to a new owner, a transfer of ownership must be made.

Important
After the ownership is transferred, the previous account owner can no longer make changes to subscriptions in the transferred account.

To request a transfer of ownership

  • If you are either the current or future account owner, call the number for your location in the Contact Support for Microsoft Online Services Customer Portal topic and provide the following information:

    • The name of your organization
    • The name and Windows Live ID of the current account owner
    • The name and Windows Live ID of the new account owner

Support will verify the organization and the current account owner. When they are verified, the current and the new account owners will both receive a confirmation e-mail message of the account transfer request.

Note
  • In order to receive notifications from the Microsoft Online Services Team and Microsoft Customer Service without delay, add the following e-mail address and domain to your Safe Senders list: msonlineservicesteam@microsoftonline.com and mailwc.custhelp.com.
  • The verification process can take less time if the original owner requests the transfer. For your protection, a more thorough verification of the transfer is necessary if someone other than the original owner initiates the request.

To take ownership of a transferred account

  1. Once you have requested a transfer of ownership, and have received the confirmation e-mail message, ensure that you have:

    • A Windows Live ID. If you do not have a Windows Live ID, create one here.
    • A completed profile on the Customer Portal. For more information, see Create My Profile.
      Note
Before you create or update your profile for the account transfer, ensure that your profile’s contact address and service usage address have the same country or region as the current account owner’s profile. These must be the same during the transfer.
  2. After you have created or updated your profile, you will receive an e-mail notification from Microsoft Customer Service that will contain a link to the Transfer Account Ownership Wizard. Click this link.

  3. Sign in using your Windows Live ID.

  4. On the next screen, verify the information, and then click Continue.

  5. If the transferred subscriptions are being charged to a credit card that belongs to the previous account owner, and there is no credit card on file for the new account owner, the Payment Information tab will appear. Enter your credit card information on this tab.

    Note
If the new account owner has one or more credit cards on file, the subscriptions from this account will be charged to one of the existing credit cards. If the new owner wants to change the credit card, they can change it on Customer Portal after the transfer process is complete.
  6. On the Confirmation page, read carefully, and then click Finish. You will receive an e-mail message that the transfer of ownership is still pending.

    Warning
The account transfer process is not yet complete. Please do not attempt to make any modifications to the transferred subscriptions from this account until you receive an e-mail notification that the account transfer is complete.

After you have completed this procedure, the Customer Portal transfers your account, and you will receive an e-mail message that the transfer is complete. The message will contain useful information on managing your subscriptions and contacting the partners of record.

After the transfer of ownership is complete, you may want to notify the partners of record for the transferred subscriptions that the account owner has changed.

Important
  • Once the ownership is transferred, the previous account owner can no longer access the subscriptions in the transferred account.
  • Subscriptions cannot be selectively transferred. All the subscriptions associated with the original account will be transferred to the new account.

To find contact information for partners of record on transferred subscriptions

  1. After the transfer of ownership is complete, sign in to the Microsoft Online Services Customer Portal using your Windows Live ID.

  2. On the Subscriptions page, locate the newly transferred subscriptions. Under the name of each subscription, click More to see details, including the name of the partner of record.

  3. In the Actions list for each subscription, select Add/Edit Partner, and then click Go.

  4. In the Find a Partner Wizard, on the Search Partners page, enter the name of the partner.

The Partner Information page displays contact information for the partner.
