Microsoft today announced that it is investing an additional US$130 million to expand its data centre located in Dublin, Ireland. The expansion is driven by increased demand for Microsoft’s cloud services. This investment builds on the original $500m investment Microsoft made in the Dublin data centre, which has been operational since July 2009, serving customers across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). In recognition of International Mother Language Day, Microsoft, a strong supporter of language preservation, today highlighted the company’s Local Language Program (LLP). LLP enables 1.7 billion people worldwide to access technology in their own language, while striving to preserve those local languages and cultural identities. Some of the services and programs available through LLP include localised versions of Windows and Microsoft Office, available in 37 languages, and Language Interface Packs, supported by through free downloads for Windows, Office and Visual Studio, available in nearly 100 languages. For the fourth year running, Microsoft is supporting Safer Internet Day (7 Feb 2012), an event organised by Insafe, a European Commission initiative to raise internet safety awareness. Microsoft also releases the latest findings from the Microsoft Computing Safety Index, revealing that a majority of consumers have basic online security protection, but are less knowledgeable about how to defend against cybercrime threats such as phishing, identity theft and fraudulent links.

The Anywhere Working Consortium today unveiled an online portal that will help UK organisations adopt more flexible working practices. The portal will serve as a resource for employers and employees alike, offering training, guidance, case studies and product offers from the consortium, whose members include Business in the Community, Microsoft, Nokia, Nuffield, Regus and Vodafone UK.
