Better access to public sector information based on open data is more than a legal requirement. It can improve quality of life and make interfacing with government much easier. However, it appears that as a whole Europe still does not fully perceive that there is a really significant market behind Open Government Data. Major barriers, especially on data reuse, need to be removed.

VENUS-C Launches New Cloud Pilots

The overwhelming response to the Open Call launched at the beginning of the year by VENUS-C (Virtual Multidisciplinary EnviroNments USing Cloud Infrastructures), a pioneering project for the European Commission's 7th Framework Programme, perfectly illustrates the sea change that is occurring in IT as part of a large effort in Europe and worldwide to use Cloud to the benefit of research, businesses and society. The fifteen new pilots, which have received fund seeds to support the testing and deployment of a the VENUS-C Cloud infrastructure, bring new applications spanning bioinformatics, civil engineering, earth sciences, healthcare, marine surveillance, mathematics, physics and social media.

A study released today into attitudes to flexible work, commissioned by Microsoft carried out by Vanson Bourne, shows that small businesses better meet employees' demands to have greater flexibility in deciding when and where to work. By not enabling the flexibility that working employees demand, larger and medium-sized businesses are missing out on the opportunity to increase their productivity and attract and retain great talent.

Meath VEC works with Microsoft to become the first second level education institution to deploy cloud computing solution

Meath VEC today became the first second level education institution to deploy centralised managed cloud computing across its network of schools and education centres. Working with Microsoft, the entire network of schools now has a single point for all technology resources and all teachers have access to the same teaching materials, can access virtual classrooms and share resources. Minister for Training and Skills, Ciarán Cannon TD announced that Wicklow VEC will now work with Microsoft to rollout cloud computing to its 12 schools based on the successful Meath VEC model.
