Businesses that choose to run applications in the cloud rather than on their own infrastructure can reduce their energy consumption and carbon emissions by a net 30 percent or more. These are some of the findings of a study commissioned by Microsoft and conducted by Accenture and WSP Environment & Energy, which looks at cloud computing's potential to help businesses operate more efficiently.

These awards are the global culmination of local and regional events held around the world throughout the year, where teachers present ideas on how technology can further educational transformation to help improve the way students learn. 13 projects were placed in this year's competition, selected from more than 125 projects presented this week and 200,000 participants over the course of the year.

The Wise Group is a social enterprise dedicated to helping unemployed people into work. To increase focus on core activities and reduce costs, it decided to replace its existing IT systems, which were unsupported, unconnected, and expensive to maintain. Working with trusted partner Ashton Court Group, the Wise Group deployed Microsoft Business Productivity Online Standard Suite, outsourcing e-mail and achieving a 30 per cent administrative saving. It also deployed Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Microsoft Dynamics CRM, which enhance every aspect of service delivery and help clients achieve sustainable employment.
