As senior vice president of the Developer Division at Microsoft, S. Somasegar leads the teams responsible for providing tools and developer platform technologies targeted at developers, designers and teams involved in software development. This includes Visual Studio for professional developers, Visual Studio Team System for software development teams, Visual Studio Express and Popfly for non-professional developers and hobbyists, and Expression Studio for designers. On the developer platform technologies, this includes providing a consistent programming model in .NET that spans the client, Web, servers, devices and services platform continuum via the Common Language Runtime, .NET Framework, Windows Presentation Framework, Silverlight and .NET Compact Framework.
Somasegar is also responsible for the Web server platform including IIS, Media Server and Commerce Server. His team also owns the key Microsoft Web properties, specifically Microsoft.com, MSDN and TechNet that provide a communication channel to connect with Microsoft customers including the developer and IT Pro audience and help them be successful using Microsoft technologies. Somasegar's group also drives the cross-company parallel computing initiative.
In addition, Somasegar oversees the Microsoft India Development Center (IDC) in Hyderabad, India and Microsoft Canada Development Center (MCDC) in Vancouver, Canada. He was the driving force behind setting up the R&D center in India in 1998. He nurtured and grew the center from scratch to a facility that today develops products and technologies across all the business groups at Microsoft. With a similar goal, he set up the facility in Canada in 2007.
Somasegar joined Microsoft in 1989, and worked on eight different operating system releases: OS/2 2.0, four versions of Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Most recently, he served as Corporate Vice President of the Windows Engineering Services and Solutions group within the Windows Division. Prior to that, he was the General Manager for the NT family of product releases.
Before joining Microsoft, Somasegar was a graduate student in Computer Engineering at the State University of New York in Buffalo. He holds a Master's in Computer Engineering from Louisiana State University, USA and a Bachelor’s in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Guindy Engineering College, Anna University, Chennai, India.
In November 2006, Somasegar was awarded an Honorary Doctorate (honoris causa) degree by Anna University, India. In February 2008, he was awarded the Asian American Engineer of the Year Award.
