Tom GibbonsCorporate Vice President, Mobile Device Strategy and Commercialization, Mobile Communications Business Updated: June 8, 2009 Tom Gibbons is corporate vice president of the Mobile Device Strategy and Commercialization, Mobile Communications Business at Microsoft. In his role, Gibbons manages hardware development, ecosystem engagement and integration and oversees the executive relationships among phone device manufacturers (OEMs). With a rich history of hardware, software and consumer product development and leadership, Gibbons also oversees the Operative Responsiveness Team (OORT) and Hero product team. Since joining Microsoft in 1993, Gibbons has held a number of management positions. Most recently he was corporate vice president of the Specialized Devices and Applications group. In that role, Gibbons supervised the worldwide development and business strategy for groundbreaking business groups that included Surface Computing, Hardware, Automotive Business Unit, Macintosh Business Unit, and Windows Embedded Business. Under his leadership, for instance, the Surface Computing group launched and deployed Surface, the company's first multi-touch, multi-user touch-screen computer. Prior to that Gibbons was general manager of Microsoft's Hardware business, where he led a multidisciplinary team of more than 200 technologists, ergonomists, industrial designers, and engineers. Gibbons was responsible for driving business strategy and product development within that group, which included designing and distributing innovative hardware devices such as the first-ever scroll wheel, the Tilt Wheel, and wireless optical mice, and keyboards. Gibbons also managed products and strategy for Microsoft's Xbox peripherals business. Before joining Microsoft, Gibbons lived in Osaka, Japan, teaching English. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations and German from Bowdoin College. He lives in Seattle with his wife and twin sons.
