Tom Gibbons is corporate vice president of the Specialized Devices and Applications (SDA) Group at Microsoft. In this role, Gibbons oversees the worldwide development and business strategy for a group of innovative end-to-end businesses that includes Surface Computing, Hardware, Automotive Business Unit, Macintosh Business Unit and Windows Embedded Business. SDA is guided by the vision of creating valuable new consumer experiences that expand computing boundaries. SDA businesses take advantage of cutting-edge technologies, such as Surface and Sync, to deliver exciting, meaningful experiences while bringing relevant new products to market on a regular basis.

In addition to leading the SDA Group, Gibbons is responsible for localization of Microsoft’s retail business and serves on the Entertainment & Devices Division Executive Team.

Since joining Microsoft in 1996, Gibbons has held a number of management positions including general manager of Microsoft’s Hardware business, where he led a multidisciplinary team of more than 200 technologists, ergonomists, industrial designers and engineers. Gibbons was responsible for driving the business strategy and product development, including designing and distributing innovative hardware devices such as the first-ever scroll wheel, the Tilt Wheel, and wireless optical mice and keyboards. Gibbons also managed products and strategy for Microsoft’s Xbox peripherals business.

Before joining Microsoft, Gibbons lived in Osaka, Japan, teaching English. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations and German from Bowdoin College. He lives in Seattle with his wife and twin sons.
