Communicator Mobile takes a step beyond simple voice services, incorporating connected communication modes such as security-enhanced instant messaging (IM), presence awareness and integrated Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) telephony. Communicator Mobile extends the power of real-time collaboration to Windows Mobile®-based devices and increases potential data revenue for mobile operators by driving demand for business-class devices with enterprise-grade client, adding rich, real-time collaboration capabilities to mobile data networks. Standard Protocols for Flexibility The architecture of Office Live Communications Server was built using the industry-standard protocol stack of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions (SIMPLE), which gives developers the ability to add presence to existing applications and create useful presence-aware solutions. Microsoft supports SIP/SIMPLE because of its broad promise in the ecosystem of future communications, a potential that goes beyond the benefits of IM today. SIP/SIMPLE gives mobile operators many choices when building their infrastructures (media gateways, etc.) and is widely accepted as a key component of IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS), which network operators are building into network architectures.
