Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Fact Sheet
May 2001

The Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional operating system is the new desktop and laptop operating system for businesses of all sizes that helps users work smarter, offering improved productivity and connectivity on the proven Windows 2000 code base. Windows XP Professional delivers all the benefits of a business operating system with the simplicity and flexibility of the Home Edition.

The following are new key features for Windows XP Professional:

Dependability

Microsoft Corp. has built Windows XP on an enhanced Windows 2000 engine, and Windows XP Professional delivers new enhancements to help keep data secure and maintain privacy.

Windows XP resists application failure with features such as side-by-side dynamic link library (DLL) support, which allows multiple versions of individual Windows components to run side by side, and Windows File Protection, which prevents core system files from being overwritten by application installations.

Windows XP has a new firewall client that protects against common Internet attacks as well as the Encrypting File System (EFS) that provides a high level of protection against hackers and data theft.

Simplified Management and Deployment

Windows XP will provide out-of-the-box support for hundreds of applications, a new feature that enables compatibility modes for applications without native support, and increased device support over Windows 2000 Professional.

Remote Assistance makes user support easier and quicker. With Remote Assistance, users can turn over control of their computer to an expert colleague or system administrator who is also running Windows XP and can solve the technical problems without needing to come to their desk. This greatly reduces the time spent on the phone and can save resource and transport costs.

Windows XP increases user efficiency with a new visual design that is task-oriented, easier to use and more intuitive, neatly grouping frequently used applications and tasks.

Functionality for Mobile and Remote Users

Remote Desktop allows users to remotely access the data and applications stored on their Windows XP Professional desktop from virtually any network connection. This is extremely beneficial for users who connect from home or on the road.

Windows XP offers mobile users extended power to help maximize the life of the battery in their computer or device and offline folder enhancements to make encrypted offline folders available when they are disconnected from the network.

Windows XP simplifies networking through support for 802.1x, making it seamless for mobile workers to connect to corporate networks through secure wireless connections without needing to reconfigure their machines. Among many other advanced features, the Network Setup Wizard enables users to easily set up networks and create bridges.

Availability

Windows XP is scheduled to be available on new PCs and in retail on Oct. 25, 2001.
