What are parental controls?

Parental controls are software and service tools that are designed to help parents and caregivers monitor children's computer use-from filtering Web content and managing e-mail contacts to setting boundaries for socializing online.

Designed to promote a child's online safety, these tools are also sometimes called family settings or family safety settings.

Using the centralized Parental Controls panel in Windows Vista parents can:

  • Specify the exact days and times children can use the computer.
  • Spell out which Web sites kids can visit by blocking site by content type or by allowing access only to certain sites.
  • Make clear which software programs children can use, and prevent them from downloading software.
  • Restrict access to games based on title, content, or rating.
