Microsoft in the Public Sector

New About Page

The challenges of Public Sector institutions are growing more complex, be it the impact of globalization on economies and the earth, evolving security threats or the ability to provide education, healthcare and other vital services to their citizens. In the face of the global economic challenges of the past few years the Public Sector has to address those expanding concerns, and create jobs and economic opportunity with a shrinking set of resources.

Innovation is central in addressing that challenge for any country, community or institution. That need is matched by new and transformative opportunities for governments & their citizens to harness benefits of technology. The emergence of cloud computing is opening up ground-breaking ways for Public Sector institutions to realize dramatic modernization in how they operate, transform their interaction with citizens and unleash the potential of their economies, societies and all their citizens.

Microsoft’s approach, built on more than a quarter century of experience in Public Sector, focuses on helping leaders and institutions innovate on their own terms through secure and flexible end-to-end solutions and an array of partnerships and programs designed to address the specific needs and priorities of local institutions and local populations.  Microsoft helps governments, schools, hospitals and other public institutions strategically harness the power of innovation to enable New Efficiencies, New Engagements and New Opportunities across their societies.

New Efficiencies

Innovation within Public Sector institutions, including emerging opportunities through Cloud Computing, can bring about not just modernization, but fundamental transformation in how they work and operate.

At a time when the Public Sector is increasingly asked to “do more with less”, finding new efficiencies is a top priority for many organizations. Cloud computing is helping governments, schools and health organizations to do just that. It is about solutions that can be implemented in days or weeks, not months or years. It is about focusing your time on what you do best – not keeping your IT systems up and running. It is about reducing your carbon footprint and freeing up resources for the core mission of any institution – while having the confidence that your information is secure and accessible whenever and where ever you need it.

It is also about enabling and empowering your civil servants. Making them more productive, but also helping them tap the information to do their job when and where they need it. New efficiency is also about helping any agency, hospital or school make faster, and smarter decisions. It’s about an evolution from the Information Age to the Insight Age, with consumable and actionable data that helps institutions large and small make faster and more informed decisions on how they use their resources.

It is far beyond doing the things we have always done – but just doing them a little faster. It is about turning technology into a strategic asset to transform the work and the impact of Public Sector institutions.

New Engagement

That increased agility and responsiveness also allows any institution to connect in new ways with the citizens it serves. Governments increasingly can deliver services anywhere and anytime, responding to the needs of citizens as an enabler, instead of a roadblock. Institutions can bring information to life for citizens, giving them a better understanding and increased confidence in how public resources are used.

Innovation is also enabling a genuine two-way conversation between institutions and the individuals they serve, enabling the citizen to be part of the solution. Citizens can have a bigger voice, sharing their ideas and their local knowledge with leaders and across their communities.  Patients can take a bigger role in their own health and wellness. Students, parents and teachers can collaborate to best meet the specific needs and learning style of each child. It is about tapping the best resources of any country or community …the collective wisdom of their people.

New Opportunities

Technology is not just a means to serve and engage citizens more efficiently and effectively, it is a catalyst for local innovation, sustainable development and new opportunity citizens young and old.

Microsoft’s  700,000 local partners are spurring local innovation and job creation in their local communities. We work with those partners to foster ongoing local innovation and opportunity through support and training to local startups, partnerships on new innovation with universities and local governments, and through programs like Imagine Cup, the world’s largest technology competition for top IT students.

Technology skills are more important than ever for all citizens, representing providing a passport to new opportunity in today’s competitive global economy.  Through an array of programs, Microsoft works with local stakeholders to provide market-driven workforce skills, training, and technology access to unemployed or underemployed workers and expand skills and access to underserved communities.

Nothing is more critical to the future prospects of any country or community than the education of their young people. Our Partners in Learning program works with local schools, governments and communities on holistic efforts to help schools and teachers more effectively use technology to advance learning for their students. These efforts have provided professional development to 8 million teachers and reached more than 185 million students since 2003.

We believe that innovation can be a remarkable tool to help unleash the talent, creativity, and passion of your citizens.  With strategic focus and the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders, Public Sector institutions can develop virtuous circles of New Efficiency, New Engagement and New Opportunity. They can harness the power of innovation to realize the full potential of their societies and their citizens.
