Text-to-Speech Package

To enable Microsoft Reader to take advantage of existing speech technologies, simply install the new Microsoft Reader Text-to-Speech (TTS) Package 1.0 , which enables voiced reading and navigation features for Microsoft Reader for Windows-based PCs and laptops (Note: at present, this feature is only enabled for the PC desktop, laptop, and Tablet PC versions).

The Text-to-Speech Package enables the following features:

  • Text-to-Speech (TTS) allows you to listen to any Sealed or Inscribed eBook in your Library using a synthetic speech engine. Note that while the majority of titles presently available in Microsoft Reader format will work with the TTS feature, most Owner Exclusive titles have been published in a format that does not allow for Text-to-Speech.
  • Verbosity helps users navigate within Microsoft Reader using voice support options for menus, annotations, and navigational elements. When you enable Verbosity, Microsoft Reader uses your keystrokes and the movement of your mouse to announce where you are within your eBook or within Microsoft Reader. You can press F5 to hear more details about where you are on the screen.

The Microsoft Reader team is developing technologies that will open new worlds of reading for everyone. Microsoft Reader for Windows-based PCs and laptops significantly increases the accessibility of the material it presents. This effort moves us closer to our goal of making Microsoft Reader a technology that is usable by all people, including those with disabilities.

As we move forward, the Microsoft Reader team looks forward to continuing its work with members of various disability communities, such as Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic and the DAISY Consortium , to:

  • Address the unique challenges this new industry presents,
  • Support our commitment to improving accessibility, and
  • Steadily improve access to electronic information for all people.
