What is the Read in Microsoft Reader add-in?
Read in Microsoft Reader (RMR) is an updated creation tool for consumers. With this add-in, you can use Microsoft Word version 2003 or Microsoft Word version 2002 to create and publish your own Microsoft Reader eBook content. Using the Read in Microsoft Reader add-in, you can turn anything you want to read into a Microsoft Reader eBook with the simple click of a button and take advantage of the enhanced benefits of Microsoft Reader with ClearType display technology. Can I include cover graphics in my eBooks?
Yes. To add a cover, click the "Customize Covers..." button at the
bottom of the RMR window.
Can I include pictures in my eBook?
Absolutely! Any image included in the Word document will be transferred into
the body of your eBook. Use Reader formatting mode to avoid possible image handling
errors.
What fonts are available using Read in Microsoft Reader?
All the fonts available on your PC are available in Microsoft Reader. For best
results, use the ClearType fonts, Berling Antiqua and Frutiger Linotype for
body text.
Is there a limit to the size of my eBook?
There's no absolute limit. The file size of your eBook should be under 5 MB
for best performance on a Pocket PC.
What is Microsoft Reader Formatting mode?
Microsoft Reader Formatting mode strips out formatting that improves Word documents
but that may interfere with the standard Microsoft Reader display.
Formatting mode removes all styles that conflict with Microsoft Reader defaults,
such as the hidden formatting for font-family and line-height, and it translates
specific font sizes into relative font sizes, so that you can adjust the font
size to your preferences in Microsoft Reader.
NOTE: When you use "Convert to Microsoft Reader Formatting,"
only Microsoft Reader-supported formatting is converted. The resulting file
may be smaller, and will display better in Microsoft Reader.
How can I create a Table of Contents?
The RMR add-in automatically generates a linked Table of Contents for your eBook
from the Table of Contents in your Microsoft Word document. To create a Table
of Contents in your Word document, refer to Word Help.
Can I create an eBook for languages other than English?
Yes, any language using European characters is supported. Arabic, Cyrillic,
and Asian character sets are not supported by Microsoft Reader. Only English,
French, German, Italian, and Spanish text will be automatically hyphenated correctly
by Microsoft Reader.
Troubleshooting FAQ
I built an eBook but now I can't find it. Where is it?
On Windows-based PCs and laptops, the default location for eBooks created by
the Read in Microsoft Reader add-in is My Library, in the My Documents folder.
On Pocket PC devices, the default location is the My Documents folder. If the
book is not in the correct default location, you can find it either by using
the Search feature in Windows, or by examining the location listed in the "This
Computer" input box in the RMR dialog.
Why aren't my tabs converting?
Tabs are converted to white space in Microsoft Reader, and are an unreliable
type of formatting when converting between formats. For better control of text
position, use spaces or tables.
Why are all my headers and paragraphs indented?
Microsoft Reader format automatically indents all paragraphs, and it indents
headers that are styled as anything other than headers. To keep the formatting
you have set in Word, uncheck the "Convert to Microsoft Reader Formatting"
box in the Formatting Options section.
I clicked the .exe file to install the RMR add-in but it doesn't seem like
it installed. What happened?
If you have opened dozens of windows or if you are running a slower PC, setup
may take a few minutes to engage. Give it a little while. If your system did
install the add-in correctly, you should see a leafy green "r" icon
on your toolbar. If you see the icon but nothing happens, see the next question.
I clicked on the RMR icon but nothing happens. Now what?
You may need to exit Word and restart. Choose Enable Macros at the Security
Warning box, and you should see the icon appear on the tool bar. If you don't
see the icon after restarting Word, choose Tools, then select Options from the
drop-down menu. Select the Security tab, and click the Macro Security button.
Select the Trusted Sources tab, and check the "Trust All Installed Add-ins"
option. Exit Word and return. If you still don't see the icon on the toolbar,
Choose Tools from the menu, then select the Com Add-ins item. Check the Read
in Microsoft Reader Com add-in check box. If Com Add-ins does not appear on
your Tools menu, go to Office XP Help and search for "Com Add-in"
to learn how to enable add-ins.
