Installing infrared devices

Most internal infrared devices are installed by Setup or when you start your computer after adding one of these devices. However, when you attach a serial infrared transceiver to a serial (COM) port or to a USB port, you do need to install it as described in this topic. This topic also describes how to install an internal infrared device that is not automatically detected.

If you have a desktop computer or a portable computer without an internal infrared device, you can connect a serial infrared transceiver to a serial (COM) port or a USB port. To do so, attach the infrared transceiver to the port, note which port you are using, and then follow the steps in To add a new infrared device to a serial port

Installing an undetected internal infrared device

If you add an internal infrared device to a computer with Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional already installed, the device is typically detected and installed the next time you start the computer. If this does not occur, you might have to install the device manually. To do so, follow the instructions in To add a new infrared device to a serial port
