Microsoft Development Center Serbia (MDCS) exists since September 2005. It started as a small operation focused exclusively on projects related to Tablet PC technology under the name Tablet PC Development Extension. Recently the Center has intensified efforts on Tablet PC projects as well as taken on new projects not related to Tablet PC. In order to reflect the broader scope of projects and the growth of the staff, we have changed the name to Microsoft Development Center Serbia.

| • | Language Handwriting Recognizer “Factory” |
 | The development of handwriting recognizers is an expensive and lengthy process. Currently handwriting recognizers for Tablet PC exist only for major world languages. In order to bring the full benefit of Tablet PC computing to a much larger end-user base, we are working on streamlining the handwriting recognizer development process and applying it to development of recognizers for a large number of European languages. |
| • | Handwriting Recognizers for Special 2D Domains |
| In addition to recognizing traditional handwritten text in various languages, we are also developing handwriting recognizers for various other special 2D domains. The examples of such domains are handwritten math equations, chemical diagrams or architectural drawings. The recognizer for mathematical equations is currently under development. A Tablet PC user could input typeset math equations leveraging such a recognizer in a more efficient and natural way than by using traditional methods. |
| Digitalizing printed books is only the first step in creating resourceful and manageable electronic materials. In cooperation with a number of Microsoft development groups Microsoft Development Center Serbia (MDCS) is developing software that performs OCR and book structure analysis with the idea to considerably improve book searching and navigation and unleash the full potential of the electronic book formats. |
| • | SQL Server Spatial Libraries |
| Microsoft SQL Server is the premier Database Management System in the industry providing reliable data storage, management and processing for various data domains. Given the increased importance of GPS enabled devices, geographic data processing is become one of the key business scenarios for many database applications. Microsoft Development Center Serbia (MDCS) in Belgrade, in cooperation with SQL Server Engine team in Redmond, is developing cutting edge database technologies related to spatial data processing which will be shipped as part of SQL Server Engine in the future Microsoft SQL Server releases. |

Our main partners are Redmond based Tablet PC Development Team, Windows Live Product Team, SQL Server Engine Team and Microsoft Research and Beijing based Microsoft Research Asia. We are also collaborating with the language expert companies, academic institutions and Microsoft subsidiaries in a large number of countries for which we develop recognizers. Finally, we are working with local educational institutions and supporting local talent development through the Internship program we have recently started.
