Install the latest Microsoft Forefront Client Security / Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 / Microsoft System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection definition updates for computers running an x86-based version of Windows

If you encounter problems while trying to install definition updates for Microsoft Forefront Client Security, Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010, or Microsoft System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection, you can download and install the latest definition updates for computers running a 32-bit (x86-based) version of Windows.

Step 1: Save or run the file.
After you download the latest definition updates , click Run to install the definition immediately, or click Save to save it to your computer. If you click Save, remember the name of the folder where you save the file.

Step 2: Install the definition update.
To install the saved definition update file:

• If your computer is running Windows Vista or Windows 7, click Start, click Documents, and then locate the folder where you saved the definition file. Right-click Mpam-fe.exe, click Run as administrator, and then click Yes. When you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation, and then wait while the definition files are installed.
• If your computer is running any other Windows operating system, you must be logged on as an administrator to install the latest definition file. Browse to the folder where you saved the file, and then double-click Mpam-fe.exe to install the latest definition file.

Note: If you do not have an administrator account on the computer, ask an administrator to log on and install the definitions file for you.

If you are running Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010, please also execute the following steps

Step 3: Save or run the Network Inspection System definitions for Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010
After you download the latest definition updates, click Run to install the definition immediately, or click Save to save it to your computer. If you click Save, remember the name of the folder where you save the file.

Step 4: Install the definition update.
To install the saved definition update file:

• If your computer is running Windows Vista or Windows 7, browse to the folder where you saved the definition file. Right-click nis_full.exe, click Run as administrator, and then click Yes. When you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation, and then wait while the definition files are installed.

Install the latest Microsoft Forefront Client Security / Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 / Microsoft System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection definition updates for computers running an x64-based version of Windows

Download and install definition updates for Microsoft Forefront Client Security, Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010, and Microsoft System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection on computers running an x64-based version of Windows.

If you are running Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010, download and install the Network Inspection System definition updates for computers running an x64-based version of Windows.

Note: You must be running an x64-based version of Windows to run an x64-based version of Microsoft Forefront Client Security, Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010, or Microsoft System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection. For more information, please visit the Forefront and Endpoint Protection websites.

Step 1: Save or run the file.
After you download the latest manifest file, click Run to extract the manifest file immediately, or click Save to save it to your computer. If you click Save, remember the name of the folder where you save the file.

Step 2: To view the saved manifest file:

• Locate the folder where you saved the manifest file. Double-click UniversalManifest.cab, then double-click UniversalManifest.xml and choose a location to extract to. Locate and open the extracted UniversalManifest.xml file.
• To determine the latest update version for an engine, search for the engine name in this file. In that section, you will see something such as:
  

  Engine name="Microsoft" status="active" default="{6869FAE0-44E4-4ab0-A3BB-15A609D3E574}"
  Package id="{6869FAE0-44E4-4ab0-A3BB-15A609D3E574}" tag="latest" version="0810240001" postdate="2008-10-24T06:46:46.4751223-07:00" ttl="6"

  In this case, the version is 0810240001.

• Compare this to the signature update version on your server by opening the folder %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Forefront Security\Exchange Server\Data\Engines\x86\%engine%\Bin, and looking at the version listed in the file update.ini.
