The Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC) is the authoritative industry voice on malware research and response on the Windows platform.
Headed by veteran virus hunter Vinny Gullotto, the MMPC has one of the most experienced senior malware research teams in the industry.
The MMPC delivers global malware research, response and protection capabilities to help protect customers worldwide from emerging and existing
threats. Microsoft has made significant progress over the years in helping protect customers from malicious software and potentially unwanted
software. However, these threats to businesses and consumers continue to evolve as evidenced by the MMPC’s analysis of the threat landscape,
highlighted in the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report, published twice yearly.
Security threats are an industry wide issue and it is important that the industry work together to stay ahead of these threats and help protect customers. Microsoft is committed to collaborating with researchers, ISVs, partners and law enforcement organizations to help provide customers with a safer online experience. Microsoft also actively participates in a number of industry bodies focused on the malware and potentially unwanted software threat landscape.
The MMPC has three main focus areas:
Protect
The MMPC provides the core malware research and response expertise that supports Microsoft’s range of security products and services,
including Forefront Client Security, Windows Live OneCare, Windows Defender and the Malicious Software Removal Tool. Together, these
products remove malicious software from hundreds of millions of computers worldwide each month.
Respond
The MMPC has established a global network of research and response labs (Redmond - USA, Dublin - Ireland, Melbourne - Australia) with additional
researchers in Japan, California, New York and other locations. With this global expertise the MMPC is able to respond quickly and effectively
to new threats whenever and wherever they arise.
Guidance and advice
The MMPC engages widely within the antimalware industry and collaborates with researchers, partners, ISVs and law enforcement organizations worldwide.
Additionally, the MMPC releases research results, advice and guidance regularly through the MMPC online portal, on the MMPC blog and through the twice
-yearly Microsoft Security Intelligence Report.
