Microsoft Singapore Community Affairs Microsoft Singapore remains committed to building on the continued success of the broader community; and as part of this vision is an advocate for People With Disabilities. As the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people realise their full potential, we are in a unique position – both in offering in-built accessibility options in our software and through the passion of our employees in fundraising and community involvement. In Singapore, Microsoft has a strategic partnership with , a local Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) whose vision is to improve the lives of the disabled. With this partnership Microsoft’s goal is to make a positive impact on people with disabilities by helping to bridge the digital divide through the power of IT, software and accessibility technology. One aspect of the program is to provide access to IT training thus creating opportunities for people with disabilities to fulfill their dreams, potential and even secure employment. In 2007 we organised a Realising Potential Charity Gala Dinner and raised nearly S$500,000 for the SPD as part of the President’s Challenge. Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO presented the donation to President S. R Nathan at the dinner, which was raised through a combination of table sales, employee donations and a Microsoft Unlimited Potential Grant. The funds were used to establish an Accessibility and IT Training Centre at the SPD facility and to conduct IT courses for people with disabilities. Various beneficiaries including those with physical disabilities, visual impairment and cerebral palsy have begun to have access to technology they never before imagined possible. The trainees, many of whom previously had no or very little knowledge of computers, have learnt basic skills from operation of a keyboard and mouse to more advanced courses in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and even web design. From over 400 training places filled between April – October 2007 the students are now able to use email to keep in touch with friends and family, surf the Internet for information and forums and keep them in touch with the broader community. Imagine a wheelchair user now able to conduct their banking online whereas previously they may have had to undergo a difficult and time-consuming visit to their branch.
