The main challenge in managing security updates is determining which of the many available updates are appropriate to address the needs and vulnerabilities of your enterprise. Updates that require immediate action to protect your environment—and address risks from newly discovered exploitations, viruses, and worms—are considered critical updates. Updates addressing areas such as increased performance or stability, or improved end-user experiences would not be considered critical to the safety of your enterprise.

Deliver Critical Updates

The Systems Management Server Software Update Services Feature Pack is specifically designed to quickly and effectively apply and implement critical updates. It provides key capabilities for detecting when machines are missing critical updates, facilitates the quick implementation of these critical updates, and provides a complete status report to help ensure that all deliveries were successful.

Feature Pack Contents

ToolWhat It Does

Security Update Inventory Tool

This Feature Pack tool builds upon the Systems Management Server 2.0 hardware inventory capabilities. The Security Update Inventory Tool is used to create an inventory of applicable and installed security updates for each client computer. This data is included in the Systems Management Server inventory and a comprehensive view of the status is provided through the Web-based reporting capabilities.

Microsoft Office Inventory Tool for Updates

The Microsoft Office Inventory Tool for Updates uses existing Microsoft technology, the Microsoft Office Inventory Tool for Updates and the Office Update Database, to carry out automated, ongoing scans of client computers for installed or applicable Office updates. This data is converted to and included in the Systems Management Server inventory information and can also be viewed from a central point through the Web-based reporting tool.

Distribute Software Updates Wizard

The Distribute Software Updates Wizard performs the following software update distribution tasks for Systems Management Server:

Analyzes update status for all enterprise clients based on security update information added to the inventory

Provides a method for reviewing and authorizing suggested updates

Downloads authorized updates and installation information

Builds packages and advertisements tailored to each update or set of updates

Distributes the update advertisements to client computers in the enterprise using Systems Management Server software distribution features

It evaluates software updates against missing and previously installed updates on targeted client computers. Only the necessary updates are installed while redundant or unnecessary updates are ignored or postponed, reducing system overhead.

SMS Web Reporting Tool* with Web Reports Add-in for Software Updates

The SMS Web Reporting Tool provides both a general purpose reporting solution and many built-in reports based on the rich inventory data hosted by Systems Management Server. The Web Reports Add-in for Software Updates provides added functionality to the Web Reporting Tool, allowing inventory information and reports to be viewed on the Web. These reports enable tracking of software update status for:

Individual updates

Individual computers

Groups of updates or computers

All updates or all computers in the enterprise

In addition to the preconfigured reports available from the Web Reports Add-In, custom inventory reports can be created by using Microsoft SQL Server™ views and the inventory schema. Enterprise Agreement license True-up Reporting has also been included to provide a simple and reliable way to report on installed applications.

* Tool contained in both the Software Update Services Feature Pack and the Administration Feature Pack.
