Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 R2 requires a Server License for each management server and a Configuration Management License (CMLs) for each managed device.
An alternative for acquiring the CML for server management is the System Center Server Management License (SML) suite available in volume licensing. The System Center Standard SML includes the CML for Systems Management Server, and additionally the standard management licenses for Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 and Data Protection Manager 2006. The SML offers a simple, convenient and cost effective way to acquire the value of System Center server management for your Windows file servers. For more licensing information, see the Microsoft Licensing Web site.
With the release of SMS 2003 R2, existing customers will need to update both their SMS Server licenses and SMS Configuration Management Licenses to deploy the new version. Customers with active Software Assurance coverage on their SMS licenses will receive the corresponding SMS 2003 R2 licenses at no charge. Without active Software Assurance coverage, customers would need to purchase new SMS 2003 R2 licenses to deploy the new version. A promotion is available until November 30, 2006 to assist customers who need to purchase new SMS 2003 R2 licenses. For more details on this promotion, please see www.microsoftincentives.com.
Note: The terms outlined here apply to customers in the United States only. If you are outside the United States, you can get pricing information from your local Microsoft office. For contact information, see the Systems Management Server Worldwide page.
