Systems Management Server 2.0 Service Pack 4 (SMS 2.0 SP4) and later supports the Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating system. If you meet the minimum requirements, you can deploy Windows XP within your existing SMS site.
For information about limited SP3 support, see Knowledge Base Article 321372.
SMS 2.0 SP5 supports the Microsoft Windows XP Professional for the Tablet PC operating system. If you meet the minimum requirements, you can deploy Windows XP for Tablet PC within your existing SMS site.
Not all versions of Windows XP are supported, nor do all versions of SMS support Windows XP. Note the following exceptions:
| • | Earlier service pack releases of SMS 2.0, including SP2, do not support Windows XP Professional as a client. |
| • | SMS 1.2 does not support Windows XP as a client. |
| • | No version of SMS supports Windows XP Home Edition as a client. |
| • | 64-bit versions of Windows XP are not currently supported as SMS 2.0 clients in either 32-bit or 64-bit mode. |
| • | No version of SMS supports Windows XP Embedded or Windows CE .NET as a client. |
The table below lists the SMS 2.0 features that are available to Windows XP Professional–based SMS clients.
| Feature | Level of support | Qualification |
Client Installation | Fully supported | None. |
Hardware Inventory | Fully supported | None. |
Software Inventory | Fully supported | None. |
Network Monitor | Fully supported | None. |
Software Distribution | Qualified support | Software distribution to a Windows XP Professional–based client may be delayed or provide inaccurate status if the user logs in through Remote Desktop and runs an advertised program. For more information on this SMS 2.0 SP3 and SP4 limitation, see Knowledge Base Article 321580. |
Remote Tools | Qualified support | When SMS is remotely controlling a Tablet PC and the Tablet PC switches its display mode from landscape to portrait or the reverse, SMS does not resize, which can cause the loss of screen items, such as the taskbar. For more information, see Knowledge Base Article 831915. |
Software Metering | Qualified support | There is limited support for software metering of Windows XP. SMS cannot perform software metering of 16-bit applications on a Windows XP-based client. |
Note: The SMS 2.0 SP3 or later Remote Administrators Console (a server role) is also supported on Windows XP Professional.
