Today, South Africa is the economic powerhouse of Africa, leading the continent’s industrial output and generating over 50 percent of Africa’s electricity. The expanding economy is in need of skilled workers to sustain its growth. This means people with advanced technological skills are in high demand, raising concerns over skill shortages and lack of access to the gains from economic growth for people without the relevant skills.

Lonmin operates in the Marikana region of the ‘‘platinum belt’’ of South Africa, an area that has long relied on cheap local labour. But as mining has become an increasingly high-tech business, it requires a correspondingly high level of digital literacy. The company teamed up with Microsoft to train teachers how to incorporate information and communications technology (ICT) skills in the classroom, a move that has improved both the mining business and the local economy.
