Setting audio/video preferences

For audio/video sessions, you can specify the range of ports and enable the audio quality metrics in the preference file com.microsoft.Messenger.rtc.plist. The preference (.plist) file is located in /Users/username/Library/Preferences. After you set the preferences, you can use Workgroup ManagerAn administration tool that provides centralized directory-based management of users, groups, and computers across an organization. to deploy the preference file to user computers. To edit a .plist file, you can use a property list (plist) editor. A plist editor is available as part of the Apple XCode tool set. The default location for the plist editor on the hard disk is /Developer/Applications/Utilities/Property List Editor. Various third-party plist editors are also available.

Enable audio quality metrics

Set the range of ports for audio/video sessions

For audio/video sessions, you can specify the range of ports in the preference file com.microsoft.Messenger.rtc.plist. If you do not set a range of ports, Messenger for Mac chooses ports randomly from the network.

Set the range of ports for Messenger for Mac

In your property list (plist) editor, open /Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Messenger.rtc.plist.
To restrict audio/video port usage to a list of ports, add a boolean preference item machine\software\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator\Portrange\Enabled and assign the value True.
Add a number preference item machine\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator\Portrange\MinMediaPort. Set it to the lowest port number in the range of ports to use for audio/video sessions.
Add a number preference item machine\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator\Portrange\MaxMediaPort. Set it to the highest port number in the range of ports to use for audio/video sessions.

Note Make sure that the ports that you specify are not used by another application.

Set the range of ports for the firewall on the client computer in Mac OS X v10.4 (Tiger)

On the Apple menu, click System Preferences.
Under Internet & Network, click Sharing.
On the Firewall tab, click New.
On the Port Name pop-up menu, click Other.
In the TCP Port Number box and the UDP Port Number box, type the range of TCP/UDP ports.
This is the range of ports specified in com.microsoft.Messenger.rtc.plist for Messenger for Mac to use to receive audio/video. You can specify the range in the 1024-65535 format.
In the Allow list, make sure that the check box for the added ports is selected.

Set access for the Messenger service in Mac OS X v10.5 (Leopard)

Mac OS X usually determines which programs can have incoming connections. If you want to set access to specific services and applications, follow these steps.

On the Apple menu, click System Preferences.
Under Personal, click Security.
On the Firewall tab, click Set access for specific services and applications.
Click add
Select the Microsoft Messenger application, and then click Add.
