Frequently Asked Questions - Multimodal

Q.How does Speech Server work with mobile devices like Pocket PCs?
A.

A unique feature and differentiator of Speech Server is its support for multimodality, the combination of speech and visual interaction in a user interface. Speech Server includes a small speech add-in (also included for free in the SASDK) for Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer for use with mobile devices, allowing users to connect to Speech Server-based applications over a wireless 802.11b (Wi-Fi) connection.

Q.Are there any multimodal devices that are supported by Microsoft Speech Server today?
A.

Speech Server was built from the ground up to inherently and easily support the development and deployment of both telephony-based voice-only applications and multimodal applications running on a broad range of devices such as Pocket PCs, Smartphones, Tablet PCs, and desktop PCs. For multimodal interaction a small speech add-in program is required. These add-ins, included with Speech Server and part of the freely downloadable Speech Application SDK available on the MSDN Downloads Web site, support Internet Explorer for PCs, and Pocket Internet Explorer for Pocket PC running Windows Mobile Edition 2003.
