Q.How does the Speech Server speech recognition engine compare to other speech recognizers?
A.

Recognition rates for speech applications are highly dependent on a number of factors, including how noisy the line is, what device is accessing the application, and how well the application was written. So, while speech recognition engine accuracy is certainly important, it is only one component of a successfully deployed speech application, and is only one of many purchasing factors to consider. That said, the enterprise-grade Microsoft developed English (U.S. Telephony) v 7.0 Server ASR engine included with Microsoft Speech Server 2004 is as good as or better than anything on the market today.

Q.Does Speech Server support languages other than U.S. English?
A.

No. Speech Server 2004 supports the development and deployment of applications in U.S. English only. We understand that some customers would like to see support for additional languages. We're looking to address this in future releases and will post updated information as it becomes available.

Q.Is the Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) engine included with Microsoft Speech Server 2004 available to purchase separately?
A.

No. Speech Server 2004 ships with an enterprise-grade Microsoft-developed English (U.S. Telephony) v 7.0 Server ASR engine for both single-server and distributed speech server configurations. It is integrated with the Speech Engine Services (SES) component of Speech Server and is not available as a separately licensed product.

Q.Does Speech Server support SAPI TTS markup?
A.

No. Support for open standards was a primary design consideration for Speech Server 2004 so it supports the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) Speech Synthesis Markup Language Specification (SSML) version 1.0, Working Draft of December 2, 2002 for Text-to-Speech (TTS) processing.
