IT Professional | Installing, Configuring, and Deploying Microsoft Speech Server
This three-day course will provide lectures, practices, and hands-on labs covering all aspects of installing, configuring, and managing Microsoft Speech Server. You will set up and configure your own Speech Server installation, perform application deployment and testing, both for telephony (voice-only) and multimodal speech applications, and learn how to effectively plan for multiple topology deployments. Security, performance, and troubleshooting tips and tricks will also be covered to ensure students leave the class with a rich set of skills and knowledge required for effective speech application deployment and management. Recommended Prerequisite Knowledge:
Before attending this course, students must have: | • | Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server 2000 or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 | | • |
Knowledge of basic TCP/IP and networking | | • |
Knowledge of Web technologies, especially Microsoft Internet Information Server |
Beginning to intermediate database administration skills are not required but may be useful. Additionally, knowledge of telephony, speech processing, and connectivity related to telephony (for example, ISDN PR1, T1/E1) is not required but may be useful.

Developer, Designer | Developing Speech Applications with the Microsoft Speech Application SDK
In this hands-on course, you will learn how to build and deploy both multimodal and telephony (voice-only) speech applications using the Microsoft Speech Application Software Development Kit (SASDK), via lecture, practices, and hands-on labs. Using the Microsoft Visual Studio® .NET development environment and the Web development paradigm of ASP.NET, students will learn about and use pre-built speech controls (including QA and Command controls), semantic maps, grammars and the grammar editor, inline and prerecorded prompts, the prompt database, troubleshooting and debugging using the Speech Debugging Console and the Telephony Application Simulator (TASim), and application deployment to Microsoft Speech Server.
Recommended Prerequisite Knowledge:
Before attending this course, students should have: | • |
Knowledge of Microsoft Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework. | | • |
Knowledge of Microsoft ASP.NET | | • |
Knowledge of client-side scripting using Jscript |
Knowledge of the Microsoft Visual C#® development tool, XML, and XSLT is not required, but may be helpful.

Designer, Developer, or Project Manager | Speech Applications: Planning, Voice User Interface Design, and Tuning
Due to the unique, temporal characteristics of a Voice User Interface (VUI), designing, developing, and optimizing speech applications requires a paradigm shift from traditional software development concepts and practices. This course will discuss the unique technologies and life-cycle of speech applications, delve into the human factors engineering approach to VUI design, and give you the conceptual tools and principles you will need to effectively design and iteratively improve your speech applications. The course includes instructional practices and lab work on creating effective dialogues, scripting, error recovery, tuning, and all essential aspects of human factors.
