Summary

Always a critical part of the IT infrastructure, databases are at the heart of a number of converging trends in IT:

Applications and data are growing in complexity and size.

High-end database management system (DBMS) capabilities have become a business necessity as organizations gather and analyze data from numerous databases.

Organizations are consolidating servers to simplify critical data center operations.

In response to these trends, Microsoft has developed a 64-bit version of its powerful SQL Server 2000 database, optimized for the 64-bit Intel Itanium 2 processor.
