This white paper presents merge replication as an ideal choice for mobile applications and distributed server applications that have possible data conflicts. Many customers deploy merge replication in large business-critical applications because it is a powerful and flexible technology. Unlike many non-Microsoft applications, merge replication is integrated with existing tools for managing the database engine and does not require additional licensing. SQL Server replication lets you avoid the additional licensing costs, and also avoid the costs of training staff to configure and manage another application.

Merge replication was already a proven technology in SQL Server 2000, and Microsoft has made significant improvements in SQL Server 2005, particularly in scalability and filtering. SQL Server will continue to invest in merge replication improvements, and it is clear that the benefits of using merge replication today far outweigh any perceived shortcomings.
