Connectivity Tools

For SQL Server Compact, SQL Server Mobile, SQL Server 2000, and SQL Server 2005

Companies and users of SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition, SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition (SQL Server Mobile) or SQL Server 2000 Windows CE 2.0 Edition (SQL Server CE 2.0) who plan to synchronize to SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005 databases will need to install the Connectivity Tools release on their servers running Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).

Overview

This page describes connectivity tools. Note that the "xx" in the file name is a placeholder for the language of the installation. Initially the connectivity tools will be available in English only ("en" for the placeholder "xx"). The SQL Server CE 2.0 Replication Components are provided for backward compatibility. Refer to the setup instructions for the installation of the connectivity tools.

  1. SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Server Tools (Sqlce30setupen.msi) updates the servers running IIS to support connectivity solutions from SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition database on a mobile device or a desktop or a tablet PC to database servers running SQL Server 2000 SP3a and above versions.

  2. SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition Server Tools (Sqlce30setupen.msi) installs the SQL Server Mobile Replication Components on the IIS box. The components are required for connecting the SQL Server Mobile database on a mobile device to a SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2005 SP1, SQL Server 2005 SP2, SQL Server 2000 SP3a, or SQL Server 2000 SP4 database.

  3. SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 Replication Components (Sql2KenSP4.msi) installs the SQL Server 2000 SP4 Replication Components on the IIS machine. The components are required for connecting the SQL Mobile database on a mobile device to a SQL Server 2000 SP4 database.

  4. SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a Replication Components (Sql2KenSP3a.msi) installs the SQL Server 2000 SP3a Replication Components on the IIS machine. The components are required for connecting the SQL Mobile database on a mobile device to a SQL Server 2000 SP3a database.

  5. SQL Server CE 2.0 Replication Components for SQL Server 2000 SP4 (sqlce20sql2ksp4.exe) installs the SQL Server CE 2.0 and SQL Server 2000 SP4 Replication Components on the IIS machine. The components are required for connecting the SQL Server CE 2.0 database on a mobile device to a SQL Server 2000 SP4 database.

  6. SQL Server CE 2.0 Replication Components for SQL Server 2000 SP3a (sqlce20sql2ksp3a.exe) installs the SQL Server CE 2.0 and SQL Server 2000 SP3a Replication Components on the IIS machine. The components are required for connecting the SQL Server CE 2.0 database on a mobile device to a SQL Server 2000 SP3a database.

Version Support

  1. The replication components are available for the following versions:

    • SQL Server 2005 SP2

    • SQL Server 2005 SP1

    • SQL Server 2005 (RTM version)

    • SQL Server 2000 SP4

    • SQL Server 2000 SP3a

    • SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition (SQL Server Mobile)

    • SQL Server 2000 Windows CE 2.0 Edition (SQL Server CE 2.0)

  2. The replication components must be installed on the machine running the IIS server. In a two-machine scenario, SQL Server and IIS server are installed on the same machine. In a three-machine scenario, SQL Server and IIS server are installed on different machines.

  3. The supported version of IIS is IIS 5.x or later versions of IIS. (Supported on 32-bit Windows Server 2003, 32-bit Windows XP, and Windows 2000 SP4)

Setup Instructions

The setup instructions are as follows. The appropriate connectivity tools from the download links vary depending upon the installation scenario download.

Installation Scenario Set 1

The setup instructions are for setting up replication for the first time on the machine running the IIS server. To upgrade existing replication components on the machine running the IIS server, refer to the setup instructions in Installation Scenario Set 2.

SQL Server Mobile to SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2005 SP1 or SQL Server 2005 SP2

  1. Install SQL Server 2005 with the replication components and the Management Tools available as a part of Workstation components from the SQL Server 2005 Installation CD.

  2. Install SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition Server Tools from %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\ 90\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\sqlce30setupxx.msi (or download from the link below).

  3. Execute Connwiz.exe from Start menu: Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition -> Configure Web Synchronization Wizard to configure the virtual directory.

  1. Install SQL Server replication components and Management Tools (part of Workstation components) from the SQL Server 2005 Installation CD.

  2. Install SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition Server Tools from %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\ 90\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\sqlce30setupxx.msi (or download from the link below).

  3. Execute Connwiz.exe from Start menu: Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition -> Configure Web Synchronization Wizard to configure the virtual directory.

SQL Server Mobile to SQL Server 2000 SP4

  1. Install SQL Server 2000 SP4 with the replication components. Note: In case SQL Server 2000 SP4 replication components were not installed in the previous step, you may optionally choose to install it by running the sql2kxxsp4.msi available from the link below.

  2. Install Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 before installing SQL Server Mobile connectivity server tools.

  3. Install the SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition Server Tools (sqlce30setupxx.msi) from the link below.

  4. Execute Connwiz.exe from Start menu: Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition -> Configure Web Synchronization Wizard to configure the virtual directory.

  1. Install SQL Server 2000 SP4 replication components (sql2kxxsp4.msi) from the link below.

  2. Install .NET framework 2.0 before installing SQL Server Mobile connectivity server tools.

  3. Install the SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition Server Tools (sqlce30setupxx.msi) from the link below.

SQL Server Mobile to SQL Server 2000 SP3a

  1. Install SQL Server 2000 SP3a with the replication components. Note: In case SQL Server 2000 SP3a replication components were not installed in the previous step, you may optionally choose to install it by running the sql2kxxsp3a.msi available from the link below.

  2. Install .NET framework 2.0 before installing SQL Server Mobile connectivity server tools.

  3. Install the SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition Server Tools (sqlce30setupxx.msi) from the link below.

  1. Install SQL Server 2000 SP3a replication components (sql2kxxsp3a.msi) from the link below.

  2. Install .NET framework 2.0 before installing SQL Server Mobile connectivity server tools.

SQL Server CE 2.0 to SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2005 SP1 or SQL Server 2005 SP2

  1. Install SQL Server 2005 without the replication components.

  2. Install SQL Server CE 2.0 replication components for SQL Server 2000 SP4 (sqlce20sql2ksp4.exe) from the link below. Note: SQL Server 2005 replication client components are not required here because the package sqlce20sql2ksp4.exe has the replication components for SQL Server 2000 SP4 and SQL Server CE 2.0 that can synchronize with SQL Server 2005.

  • Install SQL Server CE 2.0 replication components for SQL Server 2000 SP4 (sqlce20sql2ksp4.exe) from the link below. Note: SQL Server 2005 replication client components are not required here because the package sqlce20sql2ksp4.exe has the replication components for SQL Server 2000 SP4 and SQL Server CE 2.0 that can synchronize with SQL Server 2005.

SQL Server CE 2.0 to SQL Server 2000 SP4

  1. Install SQL Server 2000 SP4 without the replication components.

  2. Install SQL Server CE 2.0 replication component for SQL Server 2004 SP4 (sqlce20sql2ksp4.exe) from the link below. Note: SQL Server 2000 SP4 replication client components are not required here because sqlce20sql2ksp4.exe has the replication components for both SQL Server CE 2.0 and SQL Server 2000 SP4.

  • 1. Install SQL Server CE 2.0 replication components for SQL Server 2000 SP4 (sqlce20sql2ksp4.exe) from the link below. Note: SQL Server 2000 SP4 replication client components are not required here because sqlce20sql2ksp4.exe has the replication components for both SQL Server CE 2.0 and SQL Server 2000 SP4.
