Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the National Mobile Services Provider recently entered into a ground breaking strategic partnership with Microsoft Sri Lanka by signing an Enterprise Agreement and adopting the global software giant’s most preferred offering for corporate customers. Through this long-term partnership Mobitel, a leader in the local ICT industry, will gain a significant competitive advantage to stay ahead in the highly competitive telecommunication industry, which will support the company’s ever expanding business objectives.
Mobitel will have assured access to a host of Microsoft’s innovative and up-to-date software products and solutions, including Microsoft Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007 to enhance personal productivity, Windows Server 2008 for Directory Services and Infrastructure security together with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 for improved Messaging and Collaboration capabilities. In addition, by deploying Microsoft’s System Management Server 2007, Mobitel will be equipped to manage their software and hardware assets, improve security and patch management, as well as increase productivity by using automated software deployment technologies.

Furthermore this agreement will also provide Mobitel’s staff members with home use rights for Microsoft Office tools allowing them access to the latest technologies including software tools, technical support, employee training via e-learning and updates on the latest technological developments from the comfort of their homes.

Microsoft’s Office SharePoint Server 2007 will provide Mobitel with integrated document management and version control capabilities. To further enhance the user experience of the end-users, Mobitel will utilize SharePoint portal services to create dash boards on which the users can share internal business information and indexes. The infrastructure security of the existing network will also be enhanced via a comprehensive Active Directory design and a security assessment exercise, which will provide Mobitel with a high level overview of their security infrastructure and recommendations on how security can be further improved.

Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the National Mobile Service Provider, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sri Lanka Telecom. In January 2004, the company launched its fully-fledged 2.5G GSM network that is EDGE/GPRS enabled and in December 2007 Mobitel launched South Asia’s First and Only Network with Super 3.5G HSPA technology. Investments committed to date in its 3.5G/2.5G networks and service offering totals over US$ 200 million and is set to increase its present 1000+ base stations to 1500 base stations by the end of the year.
