Microsoft and Mobitel Sign A Strategic Partnership Agreement

Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the National Mobile Services Provider recently entered into a ground breaking strategic partnership with Microsoft Sri Lanka by signing an Enterprise Agreement and adopting the global software giant’s most preferred offering for corporate customers. Through this long-term partnership Mobitel, a leader in the local ICT industry, will gain a significant competitive advantage to stay ahead in the highly competitive telecommunication industry, which will support the company’s ever expanding business objectives.


Mobitel will have assured access to a host of Microsoft’s innovative and up-to-date software products and solutions, including Microsoft Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007 to enhance personal productivity, Windows Server 2008 for Directory Services and Infrastructure security together with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 for improved Messaging and Collaboration capabilities. In addition, by deploying Microsoft’s System Management Server 2007, Mobitel will be equipped to manage their software and hardware assets, improve security and patch management, as well as increase productivity by using automated software deployment technologies.


Applauding the partnership Microsoft’s President, South East Asia Mr. Chris Atkinson said, “Mobitel, as an ICT solutions provider who sought world-class products for their technology needs, has selected Microsoft as their technological and strategic partner. This partnership ensures that they will be on par with other major telecommunication entities around the world in terms of adopting the latest technologies and integrating them with the existing ICT infrastructure of the company giving them a clear competitive edge. We are delighted to partner with Mobitel and provide them with the most up-to-date communications and technological solutions to serve their customers better”.


Furthermore this agreement will also provide Mobitel’s staff members with home use rights for Microsoft Office tools allowing them access to the latest technologies including software tools, technical support, employee training via e-learning and updates on the latest technological developments from the comfort of their homes.


Speaking on the importance of this agreement, Mr. Suren Amarasekera, CEO of Mobitel said, “We have been using and also evaluated a variety of offerings from a host of solutions providers worldwide over a long period of time, but ultimately decided to partner with Microsoft because of their current product portfolio as well as the future solutions roadmap. Microsoft has become a leader in providing solutions to the telecommunications industry worldwide and we felt that in order to be on par with world-class organization ourselves, we needed to partner with an already established giant. We are excited that this partnership will provide us with the much needed capabilities to reach out and serve our customers better, thus, enabling Mobitel to further strengthen our status as a next generation telecommunication solutions provider”.


Microsoft’s Office SharePoint Server 2007 will provide Mobitel with integrated document management and version control capabilities. To further enhance the user experience of the end-users, Mobitel will utilize SharePoint portal services to create dash boards on which the users can share internal business information and indexes. The infrastructure security of the existing network will also be enhanced via a comprehensive Active Directory design and a security assessment exercise, which will provide Mobitel with a high level overview of their security infrastructure and recommendations on how security can be further improved.

Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the National Mobile Service Provider, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sri Lanka Telecom. In January 2004, the company launched its fully-fledged 2.5G GSM network that is EDGE/GPRS enabled and in December 2007 Mobitel launched South Asia’s First and Only Network with Super 3.5G HSPA technology. Investments committed to date in its 3.5G/2.5G networks and service offering totals over US$ 200 million and is set to increase its present 1000+ base stations to 1500 base stations by the end of the year.

Mobitel has selected Ceylinco Micro Technologies (CMT) as the Microsoft partner to implement and support Microsoft technologies under this agreement. CMT, a subsidiary of Ceylinco Group, is a Microsoft Gold Certified partner for Advanced Infrastructure, Information worker, Networking Infrastructure and Security and also a Partner advantage partner for Microsoft Services.
