Barclays Computers (Pvt.) Ltd, one of the pioneers in the ICT retail space in Sri Lanka, has the distinction of being a Microsoft
vendor to sell only genuine software. A company with small beginnings, Barclays commenced business back in 1994, as the first ever
Computer showroom to begin operations at Sri Lanka’s only IT Mall, Unity Plaza. A sales outlet manned by just one Computer Technician
back then, Barclays has since come a long way, branching out into sales, after sales services, repairs, assembly, IT Logistics, PC
pickup point, accounts and administration; all under one roof with over 80 trained Staff in place.
Managing Director, of Barclays Computers Pvt. Ltd., F.M. Naleem says that Barclays has always invested in introducing new products to the
market so that the Company was in a position to offer the latest technology to their customers. “We were one of the first to promote trusted
genuine software to our customers. In an environment where piracy continues to be a constant issue in the IT space, Barclays has been listed
a ‘clean shop’ by Microsoft for selling genuine Microsoft software. We choose genuine software over counterfeit options available in the market,
in order to help our customers avail themselves of a host of value benefits including protection against malware and viruses. Genuine Microsoft
software also gives customers the advantage of being able to access Microsoft product support and the latest updates free of cost.”
“We were the first to stock Windows 8 at Unity Plaza. We also wants customers experience the new Windows 8 where we bundle promotion with Megabox
Computers with Windows 8 and run a promotion offering our customers a low cost upgrade to Windows 8 with every purchase of a Windows 7 PC.
We are excited about the response worldwide to Microsoft Windows 8, and plan to stock all the compatible devices in the future. Apart from Windows8,
we sell Windows Seven Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional & Ultimate, along with Windows Servers. We also stock Microsoft Office Products
such as, Home and Student, Home and Business & Microsoft Office Professional Versions, and we only sell the genuine product.” says Naleem.
Apart from being a genuine software vendor Barclays imports and distributes leading international brands such as Foxconn, A4 Tech, ADATA, Benq, SMC, MSI,
JNC Escan, ST Labs, Plusteck, Must – UPS, MEGABOX Computers and accessories such as optical media storage items, hard drives and monitors. In line with
their vision to provide the best purchasing experience coupled with excellent customer and after sales services to their customers, Barclays has made several
major brand tie-ups with local distributors. Laptop repairs, data recovery, PC maintenance, virus guard installation etc, are also provided by company technicians,
either at the Barclays showroom or on customer premises
Speaking of today’s local PC market the MD says that the Dynamics are changing rapidly and laptops, over the past two years, have completely dominated the local market,
outsmarting traditional desktops.“Desk tops & Laptops used to sell at a 70:30 ratio during 2010. But gradually it has moved onto a 30:70 ratio now. This is due to the
price increase in Desktops and Hard Disk drives and the reduction of prices in laptop computers. Also there is a demand for Tablet PCs which we predict will substitute
Laptops in the end, especially with the launch of new operating systems like Microsoft Windows8 which has the mobility to switch between any device with ease” he says.
According to Naleem Barclays originally sold assembled PCs with DOS before Microsoft Windows was even launched. He says there were only a few IT Companies back then selling
branded PCs like Gateway 2000, HP and IBM “It is later that we begun selling PCs with Microsoft Windows” he says. The Company who understands the changing market trends and
the strong move towards laptops and tablet PCs says that they have not given up on their desktop PC sales “We are promoting our desktops aggressively as Server or Gaming computers.”
Naleem also says that he strongly believes in the requirement of introducing PCs to the rural areas of Sri Lanka, as some of these rural areas do not have electricity or internet
connection, computer labs, proper security or proper trained staff. “We consider emerging markets as opportunities. In Sri Lanka over 50 % of households are without PCs. So we
see all of that 50% as an opportunity. This is the only way to increase IT penetration in the country.”
Trust and business ethics are an important part of Barclays’ company policy. “All our products are genuine and certified with major IT Giants like Microsoft, Intel, HP with who
we maintain good relations. We see a tremendous growth in using original software amongst the corporate sector to eliminate Virus & Spam Issues and for easy browsing. We also
anticipate that along with genuine software, Servers, Gaming PCs, Laptop and Tablet PC sales will pick up in the future” says the Managing Director of Barclays.
Poojitha Rajapakse, Director OEM of Microsoft Sri Lanka, commenting on their partnership with Barclays says that by advocating the sale of genuine software as a policy, the company
has been in the forefront of promoting Intellectual Property (IP) rights in the country. “Barclays is one of our long standing vendors and the Company’s commitment towards promoting
genuine software is commendable. They see the value proposition they can offer their clients through selling genuine as opposed to counterfeit and this is something that we greatly value” he said
