GPX—What is it and why is it cool?

Streets & Trips lets you import (and export) GPS navigation data—such as waypoints, routes and route points, breadcrumb trails and pushpin collections—for use in your travel planning. The data is stored in a special file called GPX—a file format (.gpx) for recording navigation data. Streets & Trips can import other formats such as .csv and .xls, but this article focuses on GPX.

You may download GPX files from points-of-interest (POI) websites, receive GPX files from others or create your own to share with friends and family.

For example:

  • Use Streets & Trips to create a route with your favorite stops, save it as a GPX file, and share it via email attachment with a motor club or friends, so they can create their own trips.
  • Plan a trip in Streets & Trips, save route and waypoints in a GPX file for use with your compatible navigation device1. Read more.
  • Find POI collections on the web, import them into Streets & Trips, and use them to plan your trips.
    • How about a guide to road food? Read more.
    • RVer, motor home camper or trucker? Import low clearance information in a GPX file for use in planning routes with Streets & Trips. Read more.
  • Share a GPX file with others (who don’t have Streets & Trips) to allow them to view the route information using Bing Maps™ or another GPX-compatible website to take advantage of bird’s eye and other views of your destinations. The GPX file might be one you created with Streets & Trips, one that someone sent to you, or one you found on a website for special interests such as geocaching, business travel, or RVing.

Note: Users of Streets & Trips 2010 (and later) can show or hide pushpin sets, so pushpins may be excluded from the GPX export by hiding the collection. Only visible pushpins are included in the GPX export.

Create GPX file

To create a GPX file of your Streets & Trips route, click on the Data menu, and then click Export to GPX file. The GPX file is now saved to your PC and ready for use.
