Streets & Trips Customer Story

Five states in one day: Seattle to Quebec
Melinda from Seattle

Streets and TripsIt all started with my whining, born of my burning desire to experience another culture and language, and of our realization that we would not be able to afford our longed-for first trip to Europe that summer. My mate’s first, exasperated reply was ignored—he’d heard me whine before—however, his next idea was brilliant: Québec. I did a little surfing and stopped my pouting. The only walled city in North America, Quebec is rich in culture and history, with an upper town that looks positively medieval. And the funicular. Did I mention the funicular?

We started planning our vacation using Streets & Trips. In just a few clicks, Streets & Trips mapped the route to Quebec, generated driving directions, plus estimated the travel time and fuel costs. We booked our airfare to NY, brushed up on our French and started dreaming about croissants.

Streets and Trips A month before our trip, I used Streets & Trips to search for several hotels for our stay in Quebec. Then I searched for museums, theaters, restaurants and nightclubs within a mile of our hotel and Streets & Trips generated a map of all nearby points-of-interest—including a ferry terminal that would take us across the river to beautiful Lévis. We were ready for our vacation!

Streets and TripsAugust finally came and after a few days in the Hamptons, we said goodbye to the folks and headed for the first of several ferries, arriving in New Haven, CT, just after lunch. We pushed on and finally stopped in Northampton, MA, for badly needed supplies: coffee and Internet. I fired up Streets & Trips on the laptop and found the delightful Northampton Coffee café. We were refreshed and on our way again. Now I’m from California, so I’m used to it taking days to get from one state to the next. The Streets & Trips route showed us crossing several state lines just in our first morning. Mark had planned a stop in Brattleboro, VT, so we could gas up. Afterwards, he suggested I walk across a nearby bridge. When I asked him why, he said because on the other side was New Hampshire and it would be the fifth state we would touch in a single day—a new record for me!

Streets and TripsBut alas, geographic tragedy struck just outside of Quebec. We got lost. And I don’t mean, lost as in “it must be one block over” lost, I mean lost as in we’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto. We had somehow made a wrong turn and couldn’t find the freeway we needed to save our lives. It was late, we were starving and tired, and okay we were bickering, too. We needed help, so I used Streets & Trips to re-route us from our current location and get us back on track. Twenty minutes later we were enjoying the sunset, sipping wine in the Château Frontenac hotel and watching the boats float lazily down the St. Lawrence. The server asked me in French if we were on holiday and we both replied “Oui!” Merci beaucoup, Streets & Trips!
