Here’s a quick overview of Surface Pro features.


The touchscreen, with its 16:9 aspect ratio and full-HD display (1080p resolution) is great for watching HD movies, browsing the web, and using Office apps (sold separately). Use your fingers to select, zoom, or move things around on the screen. For more info, see Surface touchscreen.

Keyboard covers

Choose from two unique keyboards that double as a protective cover. This way you’ll always have a keyboard with you (sold separately).

Surface Pen

Take notes, draw, and mark up documents using the Surface Pen.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Surface supports standard Wi-Fi protocols (802.11a/b/g/n) and Bluetooth® 4.0. This means you can connect to a wireless network and use Bluetooth devices such as mice, printers, and headsets.

Two cameras and a microphone

Two cameras to capture what’s going on around you and make video calls using Skype. You can also control Surface with your voice and dictate text. For info, see Using speech recognition.

Surface Pro features


Surface has a built-in kickstand so that you can be productive or kick back and have some fun.

Stereo speakers, headset jack, and volume rocker

Listen to music, conference calls, or audio books using apps from the Windows Store or Internet Explorer.


Yes, Surface has ports.

  • Full-size USB 3.0 port
    You can connect a variety of USB accessories, just as you would on any other PC.
  • microSDXC card slot
    Surface has a microSDXC card slot that you can use for extra storage or transferring files. For more info, see Surface storage options.
  • Mini DisplayPort
    Share videos, photos, or presentations by connecting your Surface to an HDTV, monitor, or projector. (May require adapters and cables sold separately.) For more info, see Connect to a TV, monitor, or projector.
  • Charging port
    When your battery gets low, attach the power supply to the charging port. It clicks into place. For more info, see Battery and power.


Software included with Surface Pro:

  • Windows 8 Pro
    Windows 8 Pro has everything in Windows 8 plus BitLocker data protection, domain join, and Remote Desktop Connection hosting. To see what’s new in Windows 8, see Get to know Windows. For info about language support, see Languages in Windows 8.
  • Apps and programs
    Surface comes with a great collection of apps, and you can get more from the Windows Store. You can also run programs you’ve been using with Windows 7. For more info, see Install apps and programs.

Windows button

Press the Windows button on Surface to go quickly to the Start screen.


Surface has four sensors that apps can take advantage of: an ambient light sensor, an accelerometer, gyroscope, and digital compass.

Touch Cover

Touch Cover is a cover that doubles as a super-thin, pressure sensitive keyboard and trackpad.

Type Cover

Type Cover is a slim version of a traditional laptop keyboard with moving keys and trackpad buttons.

Video adapters

Surface video adapters help you connect your Surface to an HDTV, monitor, or projector (adapters and cables are sold separately). For info about this, see Connect a TV, monitor, or projector.

Ethernet adapter

You can use the Surface Ethernet adapter to connect your Surface Pro to a wired network using an Ethernet network cable.

Wedge Touch Mouse

This special edition Wedge Touch Mouse is small enough to fit in your pocket and wirelessly connects to Surface using Bluetooth.

Power supply

Surface Pro includes a 48-watt power supply with a USB charging port. To buy an extra power supply, see 48W Power Supply.
