Connect to a Virtual Private Network (VPN)

You can connect Surface to your workplace network by using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection. VPNs connect PCs to large networks (usually corporate) over the Internet.

Important
You should work with your IT administrator for specific instructions on connecting your Surface to your corporate network using a VPN connection. For help with third-party VPN software, contact the third-party VPN provider. Windows RT, which is the operating system running on Surface and Surface 2, has built-in support for VPN. Third-party VPN software can be installed on Windows RT if it's available in the Windows Store.

Set up a new VPN connection

To get set up, you'll first need some info from your network admin: the name of the correct VPN provider and your company's VPN server name (for example, Contoso.com or 157.54.0.1 or 3ffe:1234::1111). After you have this info, follow the steps below to set up your VPN connection.

Step 1:  Connect to a network.
(To find out how, see Connect to a wireless network or Connect to a wired network.)
Step 2:  Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the bottom-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, then click Settings.)
Step 3:  Tap or click Change PC settings, then tap or click Network, then tap or click Connections.
Step 4:  Under VPN, tap or click Add a VPN connection.
Step 5:  Enter the VPN provider, connection name, server name or address and sign-in information in the fields provided.
Step 6:  Tap or click Save.

Can’t connect?

If you can’t connect to your workplace network, see the I can't connect to my workplace network problem on the following page: Why can’t I connect to a network?

If you’re still having problems connecting, there could be a problem with the server you're trying to connect to. Contact your network admin for help with this.
