Sync your settings and favourites

When you use your free Microsoft account to sign in, apps and settings can follow you from PC to PC.

A Microsoft account —an email address and password—enables you to sign in to any PC or Surface running Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1. When you sign in with a Microsoft account, your PC is connected to the cloud, and many of the settings, preferences and apps associated with your account will appear everywhere you go.

Benefits of using a Microsoft account

  • Your personal settings are automatically synced online and between the Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 PCs you use. This includes stuff like your themes, language preferences, browser favourites and history, and content for Microsoft apps and services.
  • Your friends’ contact info automatically stay up to date from places like Outlook, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
  • You can get to and share your photos, documents and other files from places like OneDrive (formerly called SkyDrive), Facebook and Flickr.
  • You can browse, buy and download apps from the Windows Store, and use them on PCs running Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1.
