Skype on Surface

With Skype-to-Skype audio and video calls and chat on Surface, you can stay in touch with anyone, on almost any device, pretty much anywhere in the world.

Skype tile

Your Surface comes with the Skype app pre-installed. Use the app to make free Skype-to-Skype calls or to call mobile phones and landlines at home and abroad at low rates.

For Surface Pro, you can also download Skype for Windows desktop, which has additional features.

Either way, sign in to your Surface using your Microsoft account before you begin using Skype.

Ready to begin? Check out the sections below to get started.

Syncing or sending data across a mobile broadband connection could result in extra charges. For more info, see Manage your mobile broadband data use.

Step 1: From the Start screen, tap or click Skype.
If the app is not on your Start screen, swipe up from the middle of the screen to open Apps view and tap or click on Skype.
You may be prompted to allow Skype to access your webcam and microphone. Access to these features is needed to make calls, video calls, and to chat.
Step 2: Do one of the following:
  • Haven’t used Skype before?
Tap or click New to Skype? Read the Terms of Use, and then, if you agree, tap or click I agree – join Skype.
  • Have a Skype account separate from your Microsoft account?
You can merge them. Tap or click I have a Skype account, enter your Skype name and password, and then click Sign in. Review the accounts you’re about to merge and tap or click Continue.
  • Already signed in to Skype with your Microsoft account?
You don’t have to do anything. Simply tap the Skype tile and you’ll be signed in automatically.

Add contacts

After you are signed in, your Messenger friends will be automatically added to your existing list of contacts. You can also add contacts that have Skype accounts. Once you are signed in:

Step 1: Swipe up from the bottom edge to see the app commands.
(If you're using a mouse, right-click within the app).
Step 2: Tap or click add contact, and then search for people by name, Skype name, or email address.
If you can't find the person, tap or click search directory.
Step 3: Tap or click the person you want to add, and then tap or click add to contacts and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • You can add mobile or landline contacts by choosing the save number option shown in app commands. You will need Skype credit or a subscription to call mobile numbers or landlines. For more information, see Skype Credit.
  • If you have a Surface Pro, use Skype for Windows desktop to import address books from Facebook, Outlook, and more. Even those contacts who do not have Skype accounts or phone numbers are listed. You can send messages to some or all of these contacts directly from the app inviting them to download Skype.

Privacy settings

You can control who can contact you on Skype by changing your privacy settings. Here’s how:

Step 1: Swipe up from the right edge of the screen, and tap or click Settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and click Settings.)
Step 2: Tap or click Options.
Step 3: Under Privacy, you can select if everyone or only your contacts can call or message you.
