Type Cover, Power Cover, or Touch Cover?

Surface Type Covers and Power Cover have mechanical keys that move when you press them, while the keys on the Surface Touch Covers don’t move.

Type Covers

If you have a Type Cover but you’re not sure which one, here’s how to tell them apart.

Type Cover

Type Cover has mute, volume, and play/pause keys to the right of the Esc key.

Type Cover is an exact size match for Surface RT, Surface 2, Surface Pro, and Surface Pro 2.

Type Cover 2 and Surface Pro 3 Type Cover

Type Cover 2 and Surface Pro 3 Type Cover have keys to control keyboard backlighting, mute, and play/pause keys to the right of the Esc key.

Type Cover 2 matches Surface RT, Surface 2, Surface Pro, and Surface Pro 2 in size.

Surface Pro 3 Type Cover is a perfect fit for Surface Pro 3.

Surface 3 Type Cover

Surface 3 Type Cover has mute, play/pause, and keyboard backlighting keys to the right of the Esc key.

Surface 3 Type Cover fits with Surface 3.

Type Cover for Surface Pro 4

Type Cover for Surface Pro 4 has a key for the right-click menu Right-click menu key next to the arrow keys in the lower-right corner.

Type Cover for Surface Pro 4 is a perfect fit for Surface Pro 4.

Surface Pro 4 Type Cover with Fingerprint ID

Surface Pro 4 Type Cover with Fingerprint ID has a fingerprint reader just below the right-click menu Right-click menu key key.

Power Cover

Power Cover has a few extra connectors that other Surface Covers don’t have. These connectors enable the Power Cover, with its onboard battery, to transfer power to Surface.
