How do I update my Surface RT?

If you’re ready to go, follow these steps to download the free update from the Windows Store:

Step 1:  Go to the Start screen, and tap or click the Store tile.
Step 2:  In the Store, tap or click the Windows 8.1 update. If you don't see the update on the Store home screen, see Can’t find the update in the Windows Store?
Step 3:  Tap or click Download.
Step 4:  The update will download and install in the background while you use your Surface to do other things.
The installer will check to make sure you have enough disk space, that your apps and devices will work with Windows 8.1, and that you have all the required updates. In some cases, the installer might find something you need to take care of before you can continue installing the update. If so, you'll see a message telling you what you need to do.
Note
If the installation is interrupted for any reason, you can restart the update from where you left off by going back to the Store and downloading the update again.

Can't find the update in the Windows Store?

Try these steps if you can't find the update in the Windows Store. After each step, check to see if the issue you're having is resolved.

Step 1:  Close and reopen the Windows Store.
Step 2:  Ensure that KB 2871389 has been installed in Windows Update.
To see your update history, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and tap or click Settings, and then tap or click Change PC settings. Tap or click Update and recovery, and then tap or click Windows Update. Tap or click View your update history.
Step 3:  If KB 2871389 doesn’t appear in your update history list, you should install it manually. For info about manual updating, see Install Surface and Windows updates.
Step 4:  Restart Surface.
Step 5:  Reset the Windows Store.
To do this, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap or click Search, and in the search box, enter run. Tap or click Run, and in the Run command, enter wsreset. Tap or click OK.
Step 6:  If you are still unable to see the Windows 8.1 update in the store, contact us.
Note
If you are using a Surface device in an organizational setting, most likely you will need assistance from your IT department to update to Windows 8.1. It’s possible that you are using a commercial version of Windows, such as a volume license or enterprise edition.

Update Surface Pro from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1

Get the most from your Surface Pro by updating to Windows 8.1. After you update to Windows 8.1, you can upgrade to Windows 10 if you want.

Follow these steps to download the free update from the Windows Store:

Step 1: On the Start screen, tap or click Store to open the Windows Store.
Doing this first will allow you to see the progress of the installation once it starts.
Step 2: Download Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store .
The installer will check to make sure you have enough disk space, that your apps and devices will work with Windows 8.1, and that you have all the required updates. In some cases, the installer might find something you need to take care of before you can continue installing the update. If so, you'll see a message telling you what you need to do.

Can't find the update in the Windows Store?

Try these steps if you can't find the update in the Windows Store. After each step, check to see if you can find it.

Step 1: Close and reopen the Windows Store.
Step 2: Make sure that KB 2871389 has been installed in Windows Update.
To see your update history:

Step 1: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen and tap or click Settings > Change PC settings > Update and recovery.
Step 2: Tap or click Windows Update > View your update history.
Step 3: If KB 2871389 doesn’t appear in your update history list, you should install it manually. Here’s how:

Step 1: Go to Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2871389).
Step 2: Tap or click your language in the drop-down box and tap or click Download.
Step 3: Tap or click Run to install KB 2871389 immediately or Save to create a file you can use to install it later.
Step 4: Restart your Surface.
Step 5: Reset the Windows Store. Here’s how:

Step 1: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen and tap or click Search.
Step 2: In the search box, enter run, and in the search results, tap or click Run.
Step 3: In the Run command enter wsreset. Tap or click OK.

If you still can’t see the Windows 8.1 update in the store, contact us.
