Find, change, or set your SIM card PIN

Your SIM card has a PIN you can use to block mobile broadband access. Here’s how to find it, change it, or set it so you don’t need to use it.

Find your SIM card PIN

Your PIN, or personal identification number, is used to block and unblock your SIM card and enable mobile broadband connections. You will be prompted for the PIN the first time you insert the SIM card or if you reset your Surface. Your mobile operator sets a default PIN. Contact your mobile operator if you don’t know or remember your current SIM card PIN.

Change or turn off your PIN

Once you have the default PIN, you can change it to a number of your choice or make it so you don’t need to enter a PIN at all. To do this:

Step 1: Go to Start Windows logo > Settings > Network and Internet > Cellular.
Step 2: Under Cellular, select your mobile broadband network, and select Advanced options.
Step 3: Under Security, select Use SIM PIN.
Step 4: Enter your current PIN, and select OK.
Step 5:

Next, either:

  • Select Change SIM PIN to set a new number.
  • Select Remove SIM PIN to make it so you don’t need to use the PIN at all. This does make your device less secure, however.
Note
If you enter an incorrect PIN multiple times, your SIM may be blocked from accessing the mobile operator network until you get a PIN unblock key. Your mobile operator can give you the key and help you get unblocked.

Use an app from your mobile broadband operator

Your mobile operator may have an app you can use to do some or all of these things.
