Surface Pro won’t turn on

If your Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2 or Surface Pro 3 won’t turn on, the most likely reason is that the battery is drained. Follow these steps to pinpoint the cause. Often, it’s a simple problem that is easily fixed.

Solution 1: Check for conditions that might prevent charging

  • Is the electrical outlet you’re using to charge your Surface working properly?
    Try plugging something else into the outlet and see if it works.
  • Are conditions right for recharging?
    It’s best to charge your battery near room temperature. Surface is designed to work between 32 ° and 95 ° Fahrenheit (0 ° and 35 ° Celsius).

If these things are OK, continue to Solution 2.

Solution 2: Check the Surface power supply

Next, make sure that your power supply is providing power. To test this:

Step 1:  Disconnect the power supply from Surface.
Step 2:  Plug the power cord into a working electrical outlet.
Step 3:  Plug a USB device (such as a mobile phone) into the USB port on the power supply.
Step 4:  Ensure that all of the connections are snug and secure. Check the connections in all the locations circled in the image below
  • USB cable and the USB port on the power supply
  • Power cable and the power supply
  • Power cable and the electrical outlet
Test the power supply by trying to charge a phone through the USB port

If the USB device doesn’t receive power, your power supply may need to be replaced. For more info, see contact us.

If the USB device receives power, go to Solution 3.

When the power supply is plugged into an outlet but not attached to Surface, the light on the magnetic connector will not light. The light only turns on when the power supply is also connected to Surface.

Solution 3: Disconnect cords, remove accessories and check connectors

Step 1:  Unplug the Surface power cord from the electrical outlet, and if you have any of the following attached, remove or disconnect them from Surface:

  • Power supply
  • Surface Cover
  • microSD card
  • USB devices such as printers, keyboards, or mice
  • Video or audio cables or adapters

Step 2: 

Check the magnetic connectors on the power supply's connector and on the Surface charging port (on the side of Surface). With the power cord unplugged from the outlet, clean the magnets on the Surface connector tip and on the charging port with a soft cloth and a small amount of rubbing alcohol.

Step 3: 

Reconnect the power supply to Surface and do both of the following:

  • Plug the power supply into a working electrical outlet.
  • Connect the magnetic tip of the power connector to the charging port on Surface.
Step 4: 

Look at the connector to see if the light is on.

  • If the light does not turn on, your power supply may need to be replaced. For more info, contact us.
  • If the light does turn on, try to turn on Surface.
Step 5: 

Press and release the power button on your Surface.

  • If your Surface turns on, the battery on your Surface is likely still very low. Let it continue to charge for a while.
  • If your Surface won’t turn on, go to Solution 4.

Solution 4: Two-button shutdown

Don’t use this process on Surface RT or Surface 2.

Use this two-button shutdown process to ensure that Surface is turned off completely.

Here’s how:

Step 1:  Press and hold the power button on your Surface for 30 seconds.
Step 2:  Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button on your Surface at the same time for at least 15 seconds, then release both.
The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds.
Step 3: After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds.
Step 4: Press and release the power button on your Surface to turn it back on.
