Install wireless drivers on Surface Pro

Follow these steps if you need to install wireless network card drivers manually on Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2 or Surface Pro 3.

If the driver for the wireless network card on your Surface Pro is missing, you can download the enterprise driver package from the Microsoft Download Center. When you download the driver package and load the .zip file onto your Surface, you can limit what you install to just the wireless driver.

Note
These drivers are not compatible with Surface RT or Surface 2.

Step 1: Download the drivers

You can download the drivers directly to your Surface, or you can download them to another PC, and use a USB drive to transfer a copy of the drivers to your Surface. Which method you use will depend on whether or not you can access the Internet on your Surface with a wired connection.

Download the drivers using a wired connection

If you can connect your Surface to the Internet using a wired connection, you can download the drivers directly to your Surface desktop. Here’s how:

Step 1:

Go to this Microsoft Download Center page:

Step 2:  Tap or click Download.
Step 3:  Choose the file that includes a month and year in the file name and begins with the model name of your Surface, then tap or click Next.
Step 4:  Next to the Save button, tap or click the down arrow, click Save As, and choose your Surface Pro desktop for the save location.

Download the drivers to another PC and copy them to Surface

If you can’t connect your Surface to the Internet with a wired connection, you can download the drivers to another PC with Internet access, copy the driver to a USB drive, then copy them to your Surface desktop. Here’s how:

Step 1:

On another PC with Internet access, go to this Microsoft Download Center page:

Step 2:  Tap or click Download.
Step 3:  Choose the file that includes a month and year in the file name and begins with the model name of your Surface, then tap or click Next.
Step 4:  Next to the Save button, tap or click the down arrow, click Save As, and choose your PC’s desktop for the save location.
Step 5:  Insert a USB drive into your PC.
Step 6:  Open File Explorer and navigate to the USB drive.
Step 7:  Drag the entire .zip file from your PC desktop onto the USB drive.
Step 8:  Remove the USB drive from your PC and insert it into the USB port on your Surface.
Step 9:  On the Start screen, tap or click the Desktop, and in the task bar tap or click File Explorer.
Step 10:  On the left side, select and open your USB drive.
Step 11:  Drag the .zip file onto the desktop on your Surface.

Step 2: Extract the drivers

After you have driver package downloaded and on your Surface desktop, extract the file. Here’s how:

Step 1:  Press and hold or right click the file, then tap or click Extract All.
Make sure that the save location is the desktop.
Step 2:  Tap or click Extract.

Step 3: Install the wireless network card driver

Even though the entire driver package is now on your Surface, you can install just the wireless driver. Once wireless networking is up and running, you can use Windows Update to install the latest version of other drivers.

Step 1:  On your Surface desktop, open the Marvell folder.
Step 2:  Open the wlan folder.
Step 3:  Tap or click View at the top of the ribbon, and tap or click to select the File Name Extensions check box.
Step 4:  Press and hold or right click on the INF file mwlu97w8x64.inf.
Step 5:  Tap or click Install.
Step 6:  After the operation completes, tap or click OK.
Step 7:  Restart your Surface and then install any available updates.
See Install Surface and Windows updates for how-to info.

Although it's optional, you'll probably want to delete the folders you don't need after you’ve extracted the .zip file.
