Surface Pro update history

Updates are automatically installed on Surface through Windows Update. Below is a summary of what’s been included in each update so far.

Because updates are cumulative, when you install the latest update, you'll also get all the previous updates if your Surface doesn't have them already. Only updates that apply to Surface will be downloaded and installed.

You can also manually install updates:

Step 1:  Swipe in from the right edge of the screen and then tap or click Settings.
(If you’re using a mouse, point to upper-right corner of screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Settings.)
Step 2:  Tap or click Change PC settings, and then tap or click Update and recovery.
Step 3:  Tap or click Check now.
Step 4:  If there are updates available, tap or click View details.
Step 5:  Tap or click to select the updates you want to install, then tap or click Install.
You may need to restart Surface after the updates have been installed.

To learn more about Windows Update, see Install Surface and Windows updates.

Note
Firmware updates cannot be uninstalled or reverted to an earlier version.

Windows 8.1 Update

Windows 8.1 Update includes improvements to make Windows more familiar and convenient for using touch and mouse input with Surface.

  • If you’re running Windows 8.1, you don’t need to do anything to get this update. It’s free, and you’ll get it automatically from Windows Update over the next few weeks. (If you’re still running Windows 8, you’ll need to first update to Windows 8.1. For more info, see Update Surface from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.)
  • To see if the update is already installed, go to the Start screen. If you see a Search Search button button next to your account picture at the top of the Start screen, you already have the update.
  • To install Windows 8.1 Update manually, follow the steps in Install the latest Windows 8.1 Update. If you can’t install the update manually, you might be missing one or more of the required updates. Install all important updates, in particular KB 2919442, and restart Surface.
  • If you get an error message during the update indicating you don’t have enough disk space available, see Tips to free up disk space.
