Install and use Microsoft Office on Surface Pro and Surface 3

You can buy Office, activate Office (using an existing product key), or install a trial version of Microsoft Office on your Surface Pro or Surface 3.


Office 365 and Office 2013 suites

Office 365 is a subscription service that lets you install full-featured Office 2013 apps on multiple computers and devices. It gives you the most up-to-date versions of Office products, including major new releases, for as long as you subscribe. Depending on your region and Office 365 plan, it may include additional services like extra OneDrive space or Skype minutes.

An Office suite is a one-time purchase that you can install on a single computer. It includes updates to the version you purchase.

Note
People using Office 2007 or Office 2010 will be able to open documents you create in Office 2013 or Office 365.

Getting Office on your Surface

Surface 3: Includes a subscription to Office 365 Personal that you can activate any time within 6 months after you activate Windows.

Surface Pro models: You may have a bundle that includes an Office 365 subscription. If not, you can buy a version of Office 2013 or Office 365, activate an existing Office 2013 Product Key, or install a trial version of Office 365.

Install Office 365

Step 1:  On the Start screen, tap or click Microsoft Office.
Step 2:  On the Welcome to Office screen, tap or click Activate.
Step 3:  On the Sign in screen, do one of the following:
  • Enter the email address and password for your Microsoft account, and tap or click Sign in.

    -or-

  • Tap or click Sign in with a different Microsoft account. (You can create a new Microsoft account from here).
Step 4:  On the Office preferences screen, select your country and language, and click Continue.
Step 5:  On the My account screen, click the Install button.
After you have Office installed, you can open your Office apps from the Start screen.

Install Office 2013

Step 1:  On the Start screen, and tap or click Microsoft Office.
Step 2:  Tap or click one of the following options:
  • Buy. See the different options for buying Office.
  • Activate. Enter your Office Product Key if you’ve already bought Office.
  • Try. Install a one-month trial of Office 365 Home Premium (includes the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access and Publisher).

Your Office files on any device

  • When you’re signed in with your Microsoft account, Office apps save docs on OneDrive by default. This way your Office docs are in one place, available from any computer, phone or device that’s connected to the Internet.   • If you’d rather, you can still save Office docs on your Surface by choosing Computer when you save from any Office app. Set up your email in Outlook
