People app: Stay in touch

The People app is more than just an address book. People keeps you up to date with your social networks and helps you stay in touch with the people you care about most.

People app

When you connect your accounts, like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, you’ll get all the latest updates, Tweets, and pictures, in one place. Comment on an update or retweet a Tweet without switching apps.

When you sign in with a Microsoft account, all your contacts from that account will be automatically added to the People app. Adding all your contacts from your social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter, is easy too. Just add the account to your Surface and the contacts will be automatically added to the People app.

Import contacts

Here's how to add people from your existing contact lists and address books:

Step 1: Make sure you are signed in with a Microsoft account.
Step 2: From the Start screen, tap or click People.
Step 3: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and tap Settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and click Settings.).
Step 4: Tap or click Accounts, and then tap or click Add an account.
Step 5: Select the email or social networking account you want to add, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

You'll be asked to sign in with your account password, and you'll see exactly what info is going to be shared between Microsoft and the account that you're adding. Wait a few minutes, and your contacts will start appearing in the People app. Depending on the type of account, you might also see profile photos, status updates, and other info.

Add contacts one at a time

You can add an individual contact to the People app and have that contact also be added to the account you select.

Step 1: On the Start screen, tap or click People.
Step 2: Swipe up from the bottom edge, and then click on the plus sign in the lower left corner,
Step 3: Fill in the information you want for this contact and tap or click Save.
Tip
If you have questions about linking contacts or changing which contacts you see, see People app help.

Find people

Once you’ve added your accounts, there are lots of ways to get to contact info and to keep track of what people are up to.

  • Search. In the People app, enter the person’s name in the search box.
  • Jump to a letter of the alphabet. In People, select a letter to go right to people whose names begin with that letter.
  • Pin them to Start. You’ll see their updates and Tweets as they happen, and then can go straight to their contact info and updates.
  • Get to them from other apps. Apps that use contact info, such as Mail, can open your contact list directly and let you choose the people you want.
  • Add them as a favorite.Their picture will be the first thing you see when you open People.

Pin contacts to Start

Pin the important people in your life to Start to see their picture and new updates without even opening an app. It's also a handy shortcut to send them email and start chatting.

Here's how:

Step 1: On the Start screen, tap or click People.
Step 2: Enter the name of the contact whose info you want to edit in the search box. You'll see a list
of contacts as you type—tap or click the one you want.
Step 3: Swipe up from the bottom edge to see the app commands.
(If you're using a mouse, right-click within the app.)
Step 4: Tap or click Pin to Start, enter a nickname if you want, and then tap or click Pin to Start.

Step 2: Tap or click Me.
Step 3: In What's new, choose the social network you want to use, write your message, and tap or click the send icon to post it in your wall.
